Abhayam is a 1970 Indian Malayalam film, directed by Ramu Kariyat and produced by Sobhana Parameswaran Nair. The film stars Madhu, Sheela, Raghavan and Jose Prakash in lead roles. The film featured original songs composed by V. Dakshinamoorthy and original musical score composed by Salil Chowdhury.

Karuthamma (Sheela) is the daughter of an ambitious lower caste Hindu fisherman, Chembankunju (Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair). She is in love with a young Muslim fish trader, Pareekutty (Madhu). Chembankunju's only aim in life is to own a boat and net. Pareekutty finances Chembankunju to realise this dream. This is on a condition that the haul by the boat will be sold only to him. Karuthamma's mother Chakki (Adoor Bhavani) comes to know about the love affair of her daughter with Pareekutty, and reminds her daughter about the life they lead within the boundaries of strict social tradition and warns her to keep away from such a relationship. The fisherfolks believe that a fisherwoman has to lead a life within the boundaries of strict social traditions and an affair or marriage with a person of another religion will subject the entire community to the wrath of the sea.

Chellamma (Sheela) is an orphan living in a small house situated in the compound of a landlord in the village. She was an illegitimate child of her late mother. Her mother in her death bed requested her friend Valli Akka (Adoor Bhavani) to take care of Chellamma and advised Chellamma never loose her chastity like her mother. As a grown up Chellamma is a bold and independent women who works hard for a living. Many men in the village tries in vein to make some sexual advances towards her. Omana) and daughter Gomathy (Sharada). Sankarappillai is separated from his first wife Kalyani (Adoor Bhavani) but visits and supports his daughter Omana in the first marriage.

The plot revolves around rustic life in a small village. Neeli (Miss Kumari), a Dalit peasant girl, falls in love with Sreedharan Nair (Sathyan), a school teacher. Neeli becomes pregnant.
