Devta (Hindi: देवता; English: Snake God) is a 1956 Hindi Black-and-white swashbuckler film written by Sadasiva Bramham and directed by Pattana. The film had Vyjayanthimala in the title role with Gemini Ganesan and Anjali Devi in the lead while Agha, Bipin gupta, Daisy Irani, Krishna Kumari and M. N. Nambiar forms an ensemble cast. The film was produced by Narayanan Iyengar with his production company, Narayanan Company. The music was composed by C. Ramchandra with lyrics provided by Rajendra Krishan. The film was a remake of hugely successful Tamil film called Kanavaney Kankanda Deivam.

Synopsis

This film narrated the story of a king who loses his sight and needs a ‘Nagi Jyothi' (‘serpent light'!) found in ‘Sarpaloka' (serpent world!). A young man (Gemini Ganesan) working in the palace and in love with the princess (Anjali Devi) undertakes the hazardous journey of going to the netherworld and getting the magic light from the hood of a snake in the custody of the serpent queen (Vyjayanthimala). The queen is attracted to the young man who pretends to be in love with her mainly to get the light. He succeeds in getting it and the queen curses him to become an ugly man. The princess marries the prince, but they are banished and live in a hut. Soon a boy is born. The devoted wife faces many trials and tribulations before she and her son help her husband regain his original form. And they live happily thereafter.

Raj (Raj Kapoor) and Vasanti (Vyjayanthimala) are college mates who clash when she complains to the college principal about a love letter he sent her. Later on realizing her mistake, Vasanti apologizes to him and the two fall in love. Vasanti's elder sister, Geeta (Usha Kiron), supports the family by stitching clothes. Raj rents the room upstairs in their house. He falls ill and in nursing him, Geeta falls in love with him. She confides her love to Vasanti, who decides to sacrifice her love for her the sake of her sister and convinces Raj to marry Geeta. Raj initially neglects Geeta. On finding out, Vasanti writes to him that their sacrifice, made for Geeta's happiness, would mean nothing unless he is a good husband to Geeta. Raj relents and Geeta and he have a son. Vasanti joins them and Geeta suspects that there is something on between Raj and Vasanti and makes Vasanti leave the house. A few years later Geeta, having found out that Raj and Vasanti loved each other, dies in guilt leaving Raj alone to bring up their child making him promise that he will make Vasanti the child's mother. Raj learns of Vasanti's impanding marriage to her former boss (Gemini Ganesh). By the time he reaches there, Vasanti is already married. He hands over his child to Vasanti as a wedding gift and walks away.

Raj (Gemini Ganesan) meets Shanti (Vyjayanthimala) at a cricket match in Madras, and falls in love with her. Shanti does not reciprocate his love, and leaves to her home place Bangalore. Shanti’s father Sokkalingam (K. A. Thangavelu), a widower, marries Thangam (M. Saroja). They decide to go to Kashmir for their honeymoon, and Shanti also wants to come. He ditches Lalitha, when he sees this new alliance and leaves for Bangalore, but misses the train. Just then Raj (Gemini Ganesan) arrives in Bangalore for a different reason, and Sokkalingam misinterprets him as his friend’s nephew. Sokkalingam and wife Thangam leave for Kashmir along with Raj Ganesan and Shanti, who still dislikes Raj Ganesan.

Rani (Vyjayanthimala), a feminist who believes in equal treatment of women, is best friends with Kamini (Anjali Devi) much to the disapproval of her mother since Kamini's father (Chittor V Nagaiah) had married a woman of low caste. They meet Raja (Bharat Bhushan), a medical student, and Kishore (Kishore Kumar). After the initial tussle, Raja and Kamini fall in love while Kishore likes Rani. Rani goes to Columbo for the University Sports Tournament and while winning every single event she enters there, injures her leg and is in hospital. Meanwhile Kamini and Raja marry secretly since he knows his woman-hating, upper caste father will never agree to this marriage. Captain Sundar, Kamini's childhood friend, comes from Rangoon and wants to marry Kamini but is shattered as he finds out she is married to Raja. Raja's parents are told of the wedding and they call him home asking him to forget the marriage and marry a girl of their choice. Raja refuses and goes back to Kamini and misunderstands the situation when he sees Kamini with Sundar. He returns to his parents and tells them he's willing to marry the girl of their liking who turns out to be Rani, having returned from Columbo. Kamini, devastated by Raja's betrayal, decides to commit suicide. Finally with Kishore and Sundar's help, everything is sorted out and Raja is re-united with Kamini while Kishore marries Rani.

Raj's father fears that someone is going to harm the king so he sends Raj to the palace. Raj arrives there pretending to be a teacher.
