Ummachu is a 1971 Indian Malayalam film, directed by P. Bhaskaran and produced by Tharachand Bharjathya. The film stars Madhu, Sheela, Adoor Bhasi and Master Sathyajith in lead roles. The film had musical score by K. Raghavan. It is an adaptation of Uroob's highly acclaimed and popular novel of the same name (1954). Uroob won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story.

Chellamma (Sheela) is an orphan living in a small house situated in the compound of a landlord in the village. She was an illegitimate child of her late mother. Her mother in her death bed requested her friend Valli Akka (Adoor Bhavani) to take care of Chellamma and advised Chellamma never loose her chastity like her mother. As a grown up Chellamma is a bold and independent women who works hard for a living. Many men in the village tries in vein to make some sexual advances towards her. Men who covet chellamma includes the landlord and Asarakannu Muthalali(Madhu), a rowdy.

Velayudan's existence poses a problem to all the members of the joint family. Velayudhan is a twenty - year old man, but he has the intelligence of a child. The head of the joint family thinks Velayudan symbolizes the curse which hangs heavy over the house. To his mother he is source of constant sorrow. His uncle's daughter is his would be bride. He is attached to her. She is very kind to him and refuses to treat him as a mad man. Velayudan triggers problems one after the other and every new lapse help only to put fresh chains. He refuses to feel he is mad. In the end Ammukutty is given away in marriage to an old widower.
