In the film, Sandhya - a Brahmin dancer - i.e. Sridevi falls in love with Hari (Mithun Chakraorty), a Dalit. Malati (Rati Agnihotri), a young girl from a middle-class family meets Suresh Ray (Mithun Chakraborty), who is the son of a well-known lawyer Dayashankar Ray (Danny Denzongpa). After dating each other for some time, she finds that she is pregnant. When Suresh refuses to marry Malati, and she decides against aborting the baby, her parents throw her out and disown her. Left alone, she decides to take Suresh to court. She is supported in this fight by Shakuntala (Rekha), a lawyer who works for woman's rights, who also has an illegitimate daughter from Dayashankar Ray. The case gets much publicity and public support, and the judge rules in Malati's favor. At this point however, Malati refuses to marry Suresh and decides to raise the child on her own. Basanti (Ranjeeta Kaur), a lively young woman, lives in Madhupur with her father and uncle. Basanti owns a little shop called "Basanti's Shop". Here she sells various types of merchandise, most popularly dolls, that her blind neighbour (who she looked up to as her grandfather) made. Her childhood friend, Gopi, also owns a shop close to hers. He is secretly in love with Basanti and wants to marry her but Basanti does not have any interest in him, as her friend,Champa,is in love with him although he doesn't accept her love. One day, Basanti meets a singer named Raj Kumar (Mithun Chakraborty) at the hotel, "Tin Min". Raj Kumar instantly falls in love with Basanti and she does with him also, but she does not show it. Raj Kumar tries different ways into getting Basanti to admit she loves him and for him to get closer to her and her family, which involves him paying a gang of men to pretend to tease Basanti and then when he tries to save her, he'll beat them up, so Basanti's father and uncle would see Raj's bravery and how he wants to protect Basanti. Gopi, who sees Raj and Basanti were getting too close, pays the men more money than Raj was paying them to actually beat Raj. Basanti's father and uncle arrive and try to help Raj. Basanti's uncle cuts one of the men with a blade. The man vows that he'll get revenge and leaves. Basanti's family takes Raj home and makes him comfortable as he got hurt in the fight. Basanti and Raj have a little conversation where she tells him that she knows he paid the men. Soon enough, Basanti admits her love for Raj and the love birds spend some happy times until Gopi poisons Basanti's family against Raj. They tell Basanti she could never see Raj again, but they still meet on the sly and are caught. Raj says that he truly loves Basanti and he won't take advantage of her at all. Sher Singh (Amjad Khan) and his son Nagender (Kiran Kumar) are involved in poaching, cutting trees and smuggle them out of the Jungle. They murder forest officer Anthony (Dalip Tahil) and Raja (Mithun Chakravarty) takes charge in his place. Elephant Ram, Monkey Bansi & Parrot Mithu are Raja's friends in the Jungle. They help each other in the time of distress. Once Raja rescues Ram from the clutches of a crocodile. Raja warns Sher Singh and Nagender to stop the smuggling, resulting in enimity between them. Sher Singh wants to marry his unworthy son Nagender with Pooja (Amala), the daughter of a millionaire Brijmohan (Sujit Kumar). Bharti (Shobha Khote), Sher Singh's wife, on the other hand wants that Pooja be married to her innocent nephew Buddhi Ram Aval Chand Dimagwala (Kader Khan), as she is the daughter of the friend of Buddhi's deceased father. But Pooja wants to marry Raja as he saved her from the clutches of the Nagender's lusty eyes when she went out for hunting. Pooja marries Raja against her father's wishes. Raja's well wisher and tribal leader Mangola (Sharad Saxena) performs the rites on behalf of Pooja's father. To avenge this, Nagender attempts to molest Pooja and beat Raja. Ram and Bansi come in and avert this attempt. Raja catches Sher Singh and Nagender red-handed while sending the smuggled articles out of the Jungle. Judge awards them six years rigorous imprisonment. After release from the jail, Sher Singh & Nagender find Raja and Pooja have a son Ravi (Antriksh), and trouble them a lot. The extent of Nagender's meanness crosses the boundaries with the intoxication of Ram. Ram goes berserk, destroys property, attacks Raja's family, grievously injuring Ravi. Pooja mistakes Ram, quarrels with her husband, leaves the house in sheer anger with Ravi & reaches her father's place. One day, Raja's servant Sukhiya (Asrani) comes to Brijmohan's house to convey Ram's message to Ravi. The content of Ram's message to Ravi, clearance of misunderstanding between Raja and Pooja, the fate of Sher Singh and Nagender, and Buddhi Ram's role in this, forms the rest of the story.
