On the flight of Maiden 1, the first American supersonic transport, Captain Jim Walsh (Robert Reed) is the assigned pilot on an attempt to set a world speed record from New York to Paris. The flight crew includes the navigator (Robert Ito), stewardess Mae (Tina Louise) and steward (Billy Crystal). The select group on the ceremonial first flight include passengers and executives. On board is Willy Basset (Burgess Meredith), the designer of the SST, Tim Vernon (Bert Convy), the Cutlass Airlines head of publicity who is having an affair with "Miss SST" Angela Garland (Misty Rowe), the model who is the public face of the new aircraft. Hank Fairbanks (Doug McClure), an ex-pilot who now works for an airline group in South America as an aircraft buyer, accompanies the other VIPs, and wants to renew an earlier romance with Mae.

Vulcanologist Peter Slater Dan Cortese, studying elevated steam-activity on Angel Mountain, finds evidence of an impending eruption such as many animals lying dead for no apparent reason. His ex-girlfriend Kelly Adams, a resident of the eponymous town, is told about his findings—which unfortunately, happen to be during the peak tourist season. Kelly tries in vain to warn the townsfolk and council of the danger, but they fail to heed and evacuate—until the mountain shows ashfall. After several attempts to find a solution, Peter declares that the lava is soon going to come down like "a liquid avalanche" which gives Kelly the idea (due to Angel Mountain and some others nearby being snowcapped) of using a snow avalanche to stop the lava flow—at which Peter balks, until Kelly tells him of the lack of other albernatives. The two then set out skiing to planting explosives to set off a controlled avalanche to stop the flow—but in attempting to escape the resulting avalanche Peter gets buried and Kelly makes it into town to witness the result, the snow avalanche blocking off (and solidifying) the lava-flow. At that point, Peter manages to dig himself out and return to town, after which he and Kelly rekindle their romance.

Une attaque massive d'armes chimiques a anéanti la majorité de l'humanité et rendu l'air irrespirable. Le gouvernement des Etats-Unis a hâtivement construit une poignée de bunkers improvisés, dans lesquels des scientifiques sont maintenus en sommeil cryogénique jusqu'à ce que l'air extérieur ne soit plus toxique. Chacun de ces bunkers est entretenu par deux techniciens, eux aussi en cryo-sommeil, qui sont réveillés deux heures tous les six mois afin d'effectuer des tâches de routine et des inspections pour maintenir l'installation en état de marche.
