Ninón Sevilla, de son vrai nom Emilia Perez Castellanos, est une actrice mexicaine, d'origine cubaine, née à La Havane le 10 novembre 1929, et morte à Mexico le 1er janvier 2015 (à 85 ans).

Biographie

Grande admiratrice de Ninon de Lenclos, elle lui emprunte son prénom pour faire du cinéma, et y adjoint le nom de Sevilla en hommage à la ville de la musique et de la danse.

Élevée par une tante dans un quartier populaire de La Havane, elle est, dès son adolescence, remarquée pour sa grâce et son extraordinaire vitalité. Lors d'un gala de charité réunissant les noms les plus prestigieux du monde du spectacle et organisé en France en 1952, elle se voit désignée comme l'actrice ayant « les plus belles jambes du monde » titre jusqu'alors tacitement détenu par Marlene Dietrich.

Elle débute dans des cabarets de La Havane dans les années 1940 où elle se produit dans des numéros de danse. Puis elle se rend à Mexico en 1946 et entame une carrière cinématographique. Blonde, pulpeuse, la sexualité agressive, elle tourne dans des mélodrames où elle incarne une cabaretière que la société décadente tente d'asservir.

Elle est la reine du mambo et de la rumba et durant près de quinze ans tient le haut de l'affiche. Elle chorégraphie elle-même les ballets exotiques de ses films, et reste l'une des rarissimes stars mexicaines, avec María Félix et Dolores del Río dont les films se sont exportés.

Elle est aujourd'hui considérée comme une icône dans les pays d'Amérique Latine.

Pourtant les intellectuels français passent à côté de ces films. Ainsi, dans l'Index de la Cinématographie 1953, Pierre Robin écrit, à propos de Quartier Interdit : « Mélodrame au sujet invraisemblable, mais propre à émouvoir le public populaire ». Et aujourd'hui encore, Jean Tulard dans son dictionnaire du cinema englobe ce vaste mouvement cinématographique dans une notule consacrée à Alberto Gout qu'il expédie ainsi : « Il aime les mélodrames à base de sensualité : prostituées, maîtresses prêtes à se sacrifier, épouses infidèles. »

Il est évident que c'est par méconnaissance de la réalité et du contexte mexicains que ces films sont qualifiés de purs nanars. Les héroïnes incarnées par Ninon Sevilla sont toutes en lutte contre une société corrompue où règnent le pouvoir de l'argent, les mafieux et un système politique au service des couches sociales les plus favorisées. Ces héroïnes sont certes victimes, mais ne se laissent pas malmener sans réagir, et ont toutes valeur d'exemple.

Ninon Sevilla a travaillé avec les plus grands artistes latins : les compositeurs Agustin Lara et Perez Prado, l'acteur Pedro Armendariz, le chef opérateur Gabriel Figueroa, le réalisateur Emilio Fernandez. Avec ce dernier, elle a tourné Quartier interdit (Victimas del Pecado), seul film salué par de rares critiques français de l'époque, parmi lesquels Francois Truffaut. En dehors de ce très bon film, Ninon Sevilla a également tourné Maison de Rendez-vous, Disparue à Rio, La mulâtresse et surtout Femmes interdites, probablement son meilleur film, réalisé par Alberto Gout, réalisateur avec lequel elle tourna abondamment.

The story takes place in Cuba in 1850, in the era of the Black slave trade. In a sugar cane plantation, Captain Jorge (Ramón Gay) and his wife, Beatriz (Rosa Elena Durgel) live happily: are expecting a child, and their slaves live quiet and at peace with them. But one night, as the full moon appears, the sound of drums rises in the air. Yambao (Ninón Sevilla), the granddaughter of a witch supposed murdered 15 years ago named Caridad (Fedora Capdevila), has reappeared. The plantation slaves begin to fear. Her grandmother was killed by them due to black magic and curses that fell on the plantation thanks to her. Yambao's arrival coincides with a new outbreak of black vomit, not appearing on the plantation for decades, and all attributed the situation to the black magic of the girl. Yambao it's not really bad, but Caridad, who actually survived her assassination attempt, is the one who fills her heart with hatred and revenge. Jorge stays out of the traditions and customs of his slaves, but when he discovers that these want to sacrifice the girl, decides to intervene. Jorge saves Yambao, who swears eternal gratitude. But the girl starts to fall for him. Her grandmother decided to take advantage of this feeling from her revenge. Yambao decides to perform a magic ritual of Santeria over Jorge to make him love her. Her magic spell coincides with the contagion of Jorge of the epidemic plague. The doctors did not give hopes to Jorge. Yambao decides to intervene and offered her to cure him in gratitude for saving her life. The contact with Jorge, rooted even more her feelings. When Jorge manages to save himself from danger, he begins to feel the desire to be near of Yambao, which suggests that the spell has worked. For several weeks Jorge is delivered with passion for Yambao, forgetting his wife, his plantation and all his duties. However, when Jorge is informed that his wife is about to give birth, he runs to her side, and when his child born, his mind is clear and decides to return to his family. Yambao seeks revenge, and advised by Caridad decides to kill the wife and the son of Jorge. Fortunately, when about to consummate the crime, her grandmother, Caridad, is discovered by the foreman of the plantation, who kills her with a machete. Yambao flees in horror, promising not to cause any damage. The witch Caridad is the subject of a funeral ceremony with exotic rituals. At the end of the ritual, Yambao decides to end her own life by jumping off a cliff, to the astonishment of Jorge.

The Rumba dancer and singer Aurora (Ninón Sevilla), is sentenced to two years in prison for her part in a robbery with her boyfriend, the pimp "El Rizos" (Rodolfo Acosta). Once out of prison, Aurora and "El Rizos" decide to take revenge of the respectable judge Alejandro Luque (Fernando Soler), responsible for sending her to the prison. Fate reunites Aurora and the judge, and she decides to use all her feminine wiles to seduce him. Without knowing the trap, the judge falls under the spell of the evil woman, forgetting everything most important to him: his family and his profession. The judge degenerates to the point of kill and steal to be near her. His son Raul Luque (Ruben Rojo), begins investigating the situation, and like his father, falls in love to the perverse woman.

In the Havana port, two mulatto children, Mateo (Ricardo Román) and Caridad (Ninón Sevilla) grow together. She is the daughter of a white man who died in a shipwreck, and a black laundress of African origin. Over the years, Mateo falls for Caridad, but she is in love with a Mexican captain, Martin (Pedro Armendáriz), who accidentally met her at the port. The captain was also in love with Caridad and offers live together and she accepts. Caridad work in a cabaret in the port and the owner, Guevara (René Cardona), are attracted to the girl, and in a moment of jealousy, tries to kill Martin. Martin falls in financial trouble and have to mortgage his boat to Guevara. When Martin returns to Veracruz, Mexico, Guevara feels himself like the new owner of Caridad.
