Vijaya Vauhini Studios was once a major a motion picture movie studio in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.This was for some time the largest film studio in Asia. The studio was a result of a merger between Vauhini Studios and Vijaya Productions, when in 1948 a successful Telugu & Tamil movie producer Moola Narayana Swamy leased the studios which was under heavy liabilities to the Vijaya Productions run by Bommireddy Nagi Reddy, Aluri Chakrapani who were one time partners of Moola Narayana Swamy in 1930s.
Some of these films such as Pathala Bhairavi, Pelli Chesi Choodu (as Kalyanam Panni Paar 6 months later), Chandraharam, and Maya Bazar were dubbed into Tamil at the same time, Missamma was remade as Missiamma (1955) with Gemini Ganesan playing NTR's role. Excepting Chandraharam and Uma Chandi Gauri Shankarula Katha. Nearly every movie made by Vijaya Productions was successful at the box office.
The film tells the story of twin sisters who get separated at birth due to poverty. One is brought up by a wealthy person, and the other by the mother (Lakshmi). A doctor (Gemini Ganesan) comes to treat the ailing mother, and the mother's daughter falls in love with him, of which the doctor is unaware. On her deathbed, the mother reveals to her daughter the existence of the twin. The young woman goes in search of her sister and by sheer chance, both travel in the same train. The train has an accident and the wealthy sister loses her memory and is presumed dead.
Chandru (Sivaji Ganesan) has a sister (Rajam) who is married to a handsome Ravi (Balaji). But her in-laws insist on a diamond necklace, without which she cannot join her husband. So, Chandru steals a diamond necklace with a locket and then his sister joins her husband. He and his mother (Shanthakumari) move to Madras where he finds a job in a company owned by a wealthy man (Ranga Rao). He falls in love with his daughter (Saroja Devi). One day, the necklace falls down and the locket opens, revealing a photograph of a young man. The husband and the others at home want to know who the person is. She says she has never seen him. But suspecting the worst, she is sent back to her parental home.
Gopalam, the zamindar of Appapuram, is the principal of the high school named after his elder daughter Mahalakshmi. When a child, she went missing during a pilgrimage to Kakinada. She was found and adopted by a Christian couple, Mr. and Mrs. Paul, who named her Mary.
The queen of Ujjain is keen for her daughter Indumathi (alias Indu) to marry her brother Surasena, a timid and mentally unstable person. When the gardener's son 'Thota' Ramudu beats Surasena at a concert for irritating the common people, he is summoned by the king to the court. His boldness leaves a considerable impression, but when Ramudu declares his love for Indu a day before his death sentence for meeting Indu secretly, the king is reminded of the astrologers' prediction that only a brave man can save her from a wicked sorcerer. He then challenges Ramudu to amass wealth equal to that of his in order to marry Indu, to which Ramudu agrees. He is released from prison.
Vinayagam (Ajith) is a brave person living in a village called Oddanchatram, who lives with his four brothers Murugan (Bala), Shanmugam (Vidharth), Kumaran (Suhail) and Senthil (Munish). The elder brother loves the younger ones to the core, and sacrifices his happiness for their good. They are often caught in fights and they are proud of it. Advocate Bail Perumal (Santhanam), who bails them out whenever legal issues arise because of their brawls. Vinayagam hates the idea of marriage as he feels that his wife might create disharmony among brothers. Though the four younger brothers say that they don't want to either fall in love or get married, when Vinayagam is not around, they all have their secret lovers. Now, in order to get the green light for their love stories, they learn through his brother's childhood friend Collector Subbu (Ramesh Kanna) that Vinayakam, in school, was in love with a girl named Koppuram Devi (fondly called Kopu) and his brothers hatch a plan to find her and reintroduce her to Vinayakam, so he can fall for her all over again. But she's married now and has kids. So the brothers conspire to do the most logical thing, which is to find another woman named Koppuram Devi (fondly called Kopu), because, you see, Vinayakam was not in love with that girl so much as her name, and when he meets another (completely random) girl with that name, he is sure to lose his heart to her, just because she bears that name. Though initially reluctant later Vinayakam himself falls in love with her. He clashes with a goon called Vanangamudi (Pradeep Rawat) to take care of market in the village. Vanangamudi tries to kill Vinayagam's brothers while Vinayagam kidnaps Vanangamudi's son (Amit Kumar Tiwari) after clashing, Vinayagam orders Vanangamudi to leave this village.
Ramu (MGR) is the cowardly one – the heir to all riches of Poonjolai Jamin. He has been raised that way by his sister's husband Narendran (Nambiar). Ramu shivers at the very mention of his brother in law's name and a whiplash is Narendran's favorite form of punishment. Narendran wants to get Ramu married to Leela (Saroja Devi) but she is turned off by his cowardice. Ilango (MGR) is a jobless young man, prone to pick a fight and for this reason, the cause of trouble for his mother. Circumstances lead to Ramu and Ilango taking each other's place. Ilango teaches a lesson to Narendran while Ramu learns the ways of the world. Then Ilango teaches Narendran a lesson which forces him to leave the house. Due to this, his sister scolds and he plans to leave by reveal that he was not Ramu. Then the relation of the story reveals that Ramu and Ilango are brothers. With Ramu being kidnapped and Ilango going to help his brother and revealing everything to narendran brings the film to climax.
Rao Bahadur Ramadasu (T. S. Balaiah) borrows from all and sundry, and spends relentlessly. Zamindar Diwan Bahadur Mukunda Rao (S. V. Ranga Rao) is an innocent simpleton, and a good man. He is on the quest for the perfect match for his granddaughter Manjari (Savitri). Ramadasu wants his London-returned son, Dr. Raghu (T. R. Ramachandran) to marry Manjari and take all of Mukunda Rao's assets.
