Sachein (Vijay) is a carefree and happy go lucky guy college student, who comes across the beautiful Shalini (Genelia D'Souza) on college campus and falls deeply in love with her but she doesn't love him. Arnold aka Ayyasamy (Vadivelu) has repeated the same class every year for nine consecutive years. He claims this is because he wants to be grateful to his teachers and Santhanam (Santhanam). Also, Arnold and Santhanam love Shalini. Shaliini doesn't take kindly to Sachein's smitten behaviour. Sachein is able to befriend Shalini through persistence. Shalini grows fond of Sachein. Santhanam, jealous of Sachein's relationship with Shalini, writes a graffiti on the school wall. The graffiti reads "Sachein loves Shalini". Shalini confronts Sachein, and demands an explanation. Sachein pleads his innocence, and Shalini believes him. However, Sachein tells Shalini that even though he didn't write the graffiti, he really does love Shalini. Shalini bashes Sachein, telling him that he does not know the true meaning of love, and tells him she does not love him. The next day, Sachein meets Shalini and tells her that she will fall for him. Shalini takes on Sachein's bet and gives him a total of one month to try and make her fall in love. Shalini though is a good friend of Sachein until Manju (Bipasha Basu) runs behind Sachein with skimpy costumes and makes Shalini go green with envy. Shalini's parents have arranged her wedding with an industrialist's son in Canada, yet Sachein pushes on. Days pass, and yet Sachein is not able to presuade Shalini. On the last day of their bet, Sachein decides to bid goodbye to Shalini and even apologies for running behind her so long. Shalini develops a soft corner for Sachein and decides to express her love to him until his dad (Raghuvaran) who is a multi millionaire comes to meet him. Shalini doesn't express her love because then he will think that she loves him only for the money. Sachein plans on leaving India, and goes to the airport. When Sachein was about to take the plane home Shalini expresses her love to him and they are united.

The combination of Super Star Rajini and Kannada Superstar Dr. Vishnuvardhan came together for this movie. Raja (RajiniKanth) is a thief- expert in breaking open treasuries. In one such robbery, he is being watched by a jolly but shrewd police inspector Rajasingam (Sivaji Ganesan). Radha (Madhavi) is a gorgeous disco club dancer & singer. Both Raja and Radha are in love with each other. But Raja has not disclosed to Radha that he is a thief. An evil brother-sister duo- seek revenge against crime boss Sudarshan who cheated Jwaala and siphoned her money. Therefore they hire Raja to break open Sudarshan's treasury and steal back the money. Raja is paid a token amount to do the job. But suddenly Inspector Rajasingam arrests Raja and the court sentences Raja to 2 years imprisonment. Radha is devastated after she realizes Raja was a thief. Meanwhile, Amar (Vishnuvardhan) is an ace crime member in Sudarshan's gang who revolts against Sudarshan. He is a widower with a daughter is studying in a boarding school. However before quitting Sudarshan's gang, Amar has committed a crime wearing a mask and Inspector Rajasingam is investigating that case. Once Amar saves Radha from a gang of rowdy bikers. They meet regularly as Radha likes Amar's daughter. Soon Amar begins to love Radha who does not reciprocate because she still loves Raja. Amar realizes Radha is not interested and does not proceed. Raja completes his jail sentence. While returning, he meets the Vijaykumar, who again reminds him of the deal to rob Sudarshan. During the conversation, Amar incidentally reaches the site and a fist fight ensues between Amar and the Vijaykumar. While fleeing, Vijaykumar swears revenge against Amar. Thus Raja and Amar meet for the first time. Raja takes Amar to introduce to Radha but both Radha and Amar pretend as if they do not know each other since they don't want Raja to unnecessarily suspect them.

Raja (Mohan), the son of a popular lawyer "Tiger" Dayanidhi (Jaishankar), is a playboy and a womaniser from a rich family. Whenever Raja sets his eyes on a beautiful girl, he pursues and impresses her and convinces her that he is madly in love with her, then abandons her after getting into a physical relationship with her. Archana (Sridevi) plays the role of popular singer, and Johnny (Rajinikanth) is her ardent fan. Johnny is a con-man who does petty-thefts (only on the greedy ones) to close the loan taken by his father. Johnny never misses the concerts of Archana and this is noticed by Archana too. A tender love develops between the two, but Johnny is guarded in accepting the love of Archana due to his not-so-clean background. But one day Johnny accepts the love of Archana when she proposes to him. Meanwhile, the other character of Rajini, a barber lives a lonely life with his assortment of pet animals. He falls for Deepa another loner and they both plan to marry. The barber Rajini notices his lover's infidelity and kills her in rage. Knowing about his look alike Johnny and knowing that he is wanted by the police, he tries to pass on the murder charge to him. Both of them are chased by police, Johnny hides in a forest, barber Rajini tries to pass of as Johnny by taking refuge in Archanas house. Archana gets hurt by the curt behavior of barber Rajini (in the guise of Johnny) and she is confused on the same. Finally, the barber Rajini realises his folly and unites the lovers by getting caught in the police, taking responsibility of Johnny's crimes included.

Raja was adopted by a criminal don (Ashok Kumar) at a very young age. After the death of the don, Raja inherits the property, and refrains from crime. However, the wealth and the power associated with it, make him arrogant. He desires Radha, the daughter of his servant, Ramu, and Raja asks his permission to marry her, Ramu accepts, but Radha refuses as she loves Kishan. Raja finds out that Radha is meeting with Kishan on the sly, and complains to Ramu, who forbids her from meeting with Kishan. Then Raja finds out a secret from Kishan's past, meets with him, hires him, and even arranges a lavish marriage for Kishan with Radha, resulting in Kishan being indebted to Raja. Raja entrusts him with more important and responsible work, which must get Kishan to travel a lot. Kishan eventually finds out the real reason for Raja's kindness.

Shiv Shakti Organization (SSO), an organisation intends to spread terror in India. CBI Chief (Iftekhar) learns about this and calls for Officer Gopi (Mithun), aka Gunmaster G-9, to investigate into the matter. The trouble starts when a plane manned by Captain Kapoor (Suresh Oberoi) is attacked by a stream of deadly signals forcelanding it. Soon after, agent Jackson (Tej Sapru) is replaced with his look-alike. Gopi doesn't take long to get to this and sets out to rescue his agent. During this, he happens to encounter Priya (Ranjeeta), who's out to investigate her father's death, supposedly by Gopi.
