Gokulathil Seethai is a 1996 Tamil drama film directed by Agathiyan, starring Karthik, Suvalakshmi and Karan in the lead roles. Upon release, the film performed well at the box office and was remade in several languages.

Synopsis

Rishi (Karthik) sleeps around through the efforts of a sophisticated, dedicated and ‘immigration officer’ look alike pimp (‘Thailaivasal’ Vijay). His DAD (Manivannan) whom Rishi considers to be his ‘friend’ voices his concern in a friendly way about Rishi’s life style and suggests him to try falling in love instead of spending all his hard earned money on call girls. Rishi brushes him off asking him to only worry about his earnings and that he would take of care of the expenditure.

Raja (Karthik) feels stifled under his strict father Col. Chandrasekhar (Jaiganesh) and when his father picks a girl he doesn't like for him to marry, it is the last straw and he runs away to Ooty. There he teams up with Vasu (Goundamani) and they come up with an ill-advised plan to kidnap Indu (Rambha), the daughter of Vishwanathan (Manivannan). Vishwanathan is in fact Col. Chandrasekhar's friend and it is Indu that Raja was supposed to marry. But Vishwanathan now mistakes Vasu to be his friend's son and takes him under his wing while Raja is hired to be his driver.

Jeevanandhan "Jeeva" (Vijay) is a very rich young man. Although his parents (Sivakumar and Srividhya) want him to settle down, he goes to another city to do his MBA and stays with friends. They show hostility towards Jeeva and conflicts arise within the households and the couple decides to elope, they go to Kesavan’s Hometown and Manivannan refuge them before the Proposed Wedding. Jeeva tries to convince his mother one last time and in vain. On the day of the wedding both realize they miss their families. They decide to return home, relinquishing their feelings, and the families are happy and take them back. Jeeva’s Mom wants to see Mini so that she can get a better wife for his son goes to meet Mini. Initially reluctant to welcome them, the brothers hesitate, but their mother is welcomes them, ultimately their families accept their love, and they are reunited.

Nearing the end, Rangan takes off the Mask for a moment, and wishes people would respect him for who he is on the inside. His wife walks in, sees his ugly face, and throws him out, mistaking him for a robber. Rangan's former followers throw him to the side. Deciding that only beauty can bring him respect, Rangan puts the mask back on.
