The story revolves around the conflicting emotions of ambition, love and responsibility that the protagonist, Sridhar played by Ajith Kumar, goes through in his quest to become a successful music composer. The film opened in February 2000 to critical acclaim. It was dubbed in Telugu as Chirunama.
Synopsis
Sridhar (Ajith Kumar) has been trying to become a music director for eight years. In spite of having earned an M.A., his only dream is to become a music director (he even calls the eight-year wait a "penance"). His family, consisting of his father (K. Vishwanath), his brother Shiva (Raghuvaran), his sister-in-law Shantha (Sitara) and his sister (Preitha Raghav), is fully supportive of him. He runs into Viji (Jyothika) and their friendship soon blossoms into love. She helps him get a foot in the door in the industry but bad luck spoils his chances.Acteurs

Ajith is Red (it stands for Revolution, Education, Development), an orphan who has since grown up to be the local don in Madurai. Naturally he possesses a heart of gold and when not bashing up bad guys, he spends his time forcing schools to accept students without donations and taking care of orphans. Cheeni (Salim Ghouse) is his biggest enemy. Red falls for Gayatri (Priya Gill), the daughter of his friend and confidante Narayanan (Manivannan) and helps her without her knowledge. She too likes him but wants him to give up his life of violence. Thirumalai (Vijay) mechanic who lives in Pudupet and has three close friends for whom he would do anything. Murthy (Prashanth) earns his living taking the blame for the mistakes of other people and the jail is his second home. Murthy too accepts the gig since his lover Preeti (Jyotika) is Ramanathan's niece. In the climax, Santhosh supports Dhanushkodi for killing his father, But Dhanushkodi kills Santhosh. The film ends with Murthy taking the blame for killing Santhosh and surrenders himself to police.

Mass (Nagarjuna Akkineni) is an orphan, who bonds well with his landlord's son Adi (Sunil).
