Synopsis
Kathirvel Murugan (Bharath) is a software engineer in Chennai. He shares his room with friend Sakkarai (Santhanam). Kathir hails from Usilampatti but wants to project him as city-bred and his ambition is to settle in USA. Kathir's father Sevaka Pandian (Sampath Raj) is against his son's attitude. An influential local chieftain, he is against inter-caste marriage and love. Kathir meets Nisha (Rima Kallingal), who too wants to go abroad. Shiva (Bharath) enters into St.Peters college, Bangalore and meets Pooja (Renuka Menon), who was born and brought up in the United States and has come to India to stay with her grandparents while completing her college education. Shiva falls in love with her but soon realises that their characters are totally different. Pooja feels alone, like a fish out of water in India and she wants to return to the US. So Shiva thinks about a plan to get her to stay and he expresses his love to her by creating a fictitious character MR X but never reveals about the character till the end. Pooja(Renuka Menon) who got impressed by MR X refuses to see him in the later stage but understand and accepts shiva's true love.

Mahesh (Shakthi) returns to his family from Chennai where he is studying, for the wedding of his sister Keerthana (Saranya) who he dotes on. Shakthivel (Bharath) is the son of a wealthy industrialist and the managing director of Rajasekar Industries. His mother Kamala is suing the company because Shakthi insulted her for having an affair with the company auditor. To add to that, the girl he loved got married to someone else. Disgusted with life, he gets up and walks aimlessly, taking a bus to the Chennai Railway Station. There he boards the Pandian Express at night without a ticket and sits in gloom. Anjali (Tamannaah) is a college student who is going to her hometown Theni for vacation. Anjali is bubbly and talkative and thoroughly irritates Shakthi. She tells him of her plans to elope with her lover Gautham. At night, Shakthi leaves the train. Anjali wakes up to find him gone. Seeing him sitting on the platform, she gets off the train to bring him back. As a result she misses the train. She tells Shakthi that it is his responsibility to take her back to the train. Annoyed, he takes her to the next station so that she can board the train and leaves her. Anjali again misses the train. While she is waiting for a taxi to reach the next station, some gangsters chase her, but she runs into Shakthi who fights them off.

Aravind (Bharath) had met with a terrible accident seven months ago, that left him physically and emotionally scarred. He is currently living with his elder brother Gopal (Santhanam) and being treated for some psychotic disorder. Aravind claims that during the accident, his girlfriend Liyana (Mrithika) was with him and she died in his arms. The strange thing is that such a girl does not seem to exist at all. No one has seen or even heard of her; she does not appear in the student list in her college or even the census reports. She is not mentioned in the newspaper reports of the accident either and some strangers are occupying her home. The psychiatrist is of the opinion that Liyana is a figment of Aravind’s imagination and exists only in his mind. Unable to convince even Gopal of her existence, Aravind tries to get on with his life by going back to work. Here he meets Manjari (Erica Fernandes), a colleague (in a software company Paayal Infotech which is owned by CEO Sudesh Berry), who sympathises with him and also tries to help find some clue to Liyana’s identity. Despite all evidence against Liyana’s existence, memories of her and their love continue to haunt Aravind. Fortunately for him, a chance meeting with Liyana’s aunt sets the ball rolling (Aravind obtains all the information from Liyana's aunty who is not really her aunty but instead pretended to be, she gets killed by a goon who is killed by in a few seconds). After that things begin to unravel, Aravind finds out that he is being tortured by his own company boss (Sudesh). Reason for doing this is that Liyana happens to be splitting image of Sudesh's own dead lover called Payal so inorder to marry her, Sudesh made a plan to torture Aravind by involving Manjari in this game, Gopal gets killed in this mayhem. Aravind shoots Manjari and henchmen. Sudesh narrates that doctor was a fake person set up by him to fool Aravind and also threatened his brother Gopal to pretend ignorance about Liyana. Doctor tortures Aravind with a planned shock treatment to make him go insane but he is completely healthy and kills the doctor. He kills Sudesh and henchmen and unites with Liyana who is alive.

Anand (Jai) is a young carefree boy from Salem who comes to Chennai to stay along with his friend Chandru (Santhanam) to pursue his dream to become an actor. Anand uses the help from his friend Chandru, a television journalist, and his newly found girlfriend, Divya (Priya Anand). Meanwhile, minister Viduthalai, who was touted to become the next chief minister, is killed by minister Anbu Chezhiyan (Sampath Raj), which accidentally gets recorded on tape of an Ad film director Vinoth. He befriends a famous actress Pooja (Lakshmi Rai). They both see the video and inform the joint commissioner Kailasam, who is also a hand-in-glove in the murder. Kailasam sends some goons to get the tape and Vinoth evades. After a long chase, they get him killed in a train, where Anand and Divya were travelling. Anand, having witnessed the murder places the tape into Divya's bag, which she misses in the train. Anand develops a friendship with her after this. In an urge to become an actor he always observes the character of people with the strange attitude and one such person is John Vijay. Anand joins him and John promises to make him an actor. He would take Anand to a stranger's home, break the house and do some stuffs as if they were thief. One such house was that of Pooja, where they go and get some information regarding her. On that eve, Anand befriends Pooja, when he saves her when she was laid in the pool of blood, after being attacked by the goons. She helps him in becoming an actor and asks some photos of his to get him a chance. When Anand goes to the Pooja's home, he finds her dead and Anand is put to blame (as he was the one present). Anand goes underground, finally mistaken by Divya and her mother. Atlast, it is known that John has merely used him and it was he (John) who committed this cold-blooded murder, as told by minister. Joint Commissioner Kailasam is after Anand and the tape and finally, Anand reminds of the tape accidentally put in to the handbag of Divya. The tape goes to the right hands, to that of Gopi (Pooja's media friend) who gets it and publicizes. In the end, all the baddies are killed and Anand has become a real life hero instead of acting hero.

The young college-going Shiva (Prithviraj Sukumaran) is extremely energetic and enthusiastic. Being very short tempered, he gets easily provoked by the rich, proud Vasu (Karthik Kumar) and his sneering attitude. Shakthi’s father (Bhagyaraj) often visits his son in the hostel and is like a father to all of Shakthi’s friends. Meera (Priyamani), the daughter of an M.L.A., nurtures a soft corner for Shiva. She is brave enough to stand up to him and check him when he throws unnecessary tantrums. Shalini (Anuja Iyer), Meera’s friend, is a shy, reserved Muslim girl from a very strict family background. She is often preoccupied with her own thoughts. Karthik (Lollu Sabha Jeeva) is a total show-off who tries to humiliate Shiva and Shakthi but ends up making a fool of himself.

The film tells the story of an architect, Kathir (Karu Pazhaniappan), who is talented but also forthright in his dealings whether in office or in his personal life. He doesn't have any girlfriend or many friends whether at work or in personal life. When he is asked to design a spanking new showroom for Honda Dealership, Nandini (Meenakshi) one of the employees there meets Kathir in connection with the new design and falls in love with Kathir's forthrightness unbeknownst to him. He doesn't pay much attention to Meenakshi's overtures initially, perhaps influenced by his troubled childhood. He is approached by Shankar (Rishi), Nandini's colleague who happens to like her, to find out what it is that attracts her to Kathir, for which Kathir drags Shankar to Nandini's house and asks him to convey his love for Nandini himself. This increases Nandini's attraction towards Kathir's straightforward attitude. Gradually, Kathir starts to like her but at the same time he also fears that she is cheating on him and tries to kill her. He goes to the police station confessing his crime that he killed her. When police come to find the body in his apartment, they are unable to find the body. Kathir's friend Manmadha Naidu (Thambi ramaiah) says that last night Kathir was talking to himself and broken all the things in a fit of anger (When Kathir saw Nandini sleeping with Srikanth, Kathir got angry broken all the things imagining himself as killing Nandhini). Kathir had a troubled childhood where his mother committed suicide after her illegal affair with his father's friend came to light, his father also died at the same time, which made him to view things in a different light. In the end, Nandini claimed that she planned things to make him reform him but Kathir in anger says that he celebrate people dying. In next scene, kathir receives a call that nandini had committed suicide he immediately goes to hospital and finds out that nandini didn't commit suicide and she gave him shock to make him realize the wrongdoings. The film ends with Nandini and Kathir uniting, reflection of kathir's father gives acceptance.
