Rathnakumar, an erstwhile assistant of Bharathi Raja and also wrote script for his films Karuthamma and Kizhakku Cheemayile. The film features Sathyaraj, Soundarya and Sukanya in lead roles. The film, produced by Malar Balu and K. Dhandapani, had musical score by Deva and was released on 10 November 1996.
Synopsis
Senathipathi (Sathyaraj) is a respected village chief who is married to Meenakshi (Sukanya), while his little brother Sethupathi (Sathyaraj) is a good-for-nothing young man. Senathipathi and Lingappan Naicker (Vijayakumar), another respected village man, are best friends. Senathipathi is charged to protect the village against the robbers. Lingappan Naicker's daughter Aishwarya (Soundarya), a clever and arrogant girl, returns after studying in the city. Sethupathi and Aishwarya eventually fall in love with each other. Nagappan (Manivannan), a rich man, clashed in the past with Senathipathi and wants to take revenge on Senathipathi's family.Acteurs

Palanisamy (Sathyaraj) is an uneducated man who dreams to marry a teacher and lives with his friend Dhandapani (Goundamani). Palanisamy falls in love with Hamsaveni (Sukanya) at first sight. He decides to go to her village Irugur. First reluctant, she finally agrees to marry him, but only under three conditions : to continue to work as a teacher, to live in her hometown and with her father. After the marriage, Palanisamy imposes her three conditions : she must leave her hometown, be a teacher in the city that he has chosen and leave her father. She accepts them and Palanisamy explains the reason of these conditions.

Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) plays the role of a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by his village people. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. So Vallavaraayan convinces the priest at the temple to mix a poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result she becomes incapable of conceiving. But surprisingly, Vaitheeswari soon becomes pregnant-though she has pretended with the help of the mid-wife (S. N. Lakshmi), to do so to uphold her husband's honor. She takes poison and kills herself unable to bear the grief of being incapable of giving her husband a child and on her deathbed makes Vaanavarayan swear to take Ponni (Aishwariya) as his wife. Vaanavarayan however refuses until Ponni agrees to marry Sembattai (Thalapathi Dinesh)- Vallavarayan's hechman-who abandons her to Vallavarayan's vice. Infuriated Vaanavarayam attacks Vallavarayam and spares his life after giving him a sermon on how to win the heart of people.
