Rajkumar plays an upright Panju, who stays in Bankapura with his mother. Due to evil policies of crown prince Vajramuni and princess Jayanti, Panju and villagers are at the risk of losing their lands. When much pleading does not work, Panju leads farmers agitation to the palace, where he is captured, put to jail and tortured. Panju escapes from the prison, kidnaps Jayanti to his village to teach her civic norms and show her the harsh realities normal people face each day. He gets the entire village relocated across adjoining river, so that royal soldiers cannot trace them. He is able to turn the princess to appreciate the normal way-of-life, but faces the wrath of Palace and administration. Can he turn the tides and win his biggest battle? The film also stars Arathi as a village girl who is in love with Panju, but before anything could occur she is killed by Vajramuni as she opposed his advances.

The film opens to a woodcutter chopping down a tree. He works for Siddappa (Vajramuni), a landlord in the village. The tree he has been working on, breaks at the stem and falls on him, killing him instantly. His wife Parvathamma (M. V. Rajamma) approaches Siddappa with her two children (Vishwa and Veerabhadra) and request him to pay for the services of her deceased husband. Siddappa is however unconvinced and drives them away, which would go on to influence Veerabhadra ("Bhadra") hugely as he grows. Both the children grow into hardworking men; Vishwa however works for Siddappa and stays in his good books and Bhadra grows into an easy going man with the least amount respect for Siddappa.

This movie explores the plight of a dumb young woman (Aarathi). Srinath the hero falls in love with Aarathi's younger sister. But the father of the girls is in the Dharmasere (the religious bind) that he can't get his younger daughter married even as the elder daughter is unmarried. So he requests Srinath to marry both of them even if it is a symbolic marriage to the elder dumb girl. As fate would have it, the younger one fails to beget offspring. Desperate for an offspring, Srinath turns to Aarathi and she promptly begets a child. This movie is a poignant portrayal of young dumb women of that era, the scorn, humiliation and neglect they faced from the society.
