The story is based in Kashmir. It starts with a sad Radhika (Sonali Bendre) being introduced to an Army Major (Parmeet Sethi) by her father, Raja Saab (Shakti Kapoor) an erstwhile king and current politician. Raja Saab tells her that the Major will be a good husband for her. On the day of the engagement, news breaks of a terrorist attack in a nearby village led by the terrorist, Shaka (Ajay Devgan). The Major and Raja Saab leave with a large force to that village. But that turns out to be a ruse as Shaka comes to the place of the engagement and burns the marriage Mandap. Then he gives a long look to Radhika, who looks at him with hatred, and leaves. Shaka reaches his lair where he meets his leader, Dara (Amrish Puri) and Shabnam (Madhoo) and the rest of his gang. Dara welcomes him and proclaims him to be Diljale. Shabnam, who loves him, tries to hug him but Shaka rebuffs it.

Rajesh (Feroz Khan) was a motorcycle stuntman in a circus and is now a thief, expert in breaking open treasuries. In one such robbery, he is being watched by a jolly but shrewd police inspector Amjad Khan (Amjad Khan). Sheela (Zeenat Aman) is a gorgeous disco club dancer and singer. Rajesh and Sheela are in love. Rajesh has not disclosed to Sheela that he is a thief. An evil brother-sister duo- Vikram (Shakti Kapoor) and Jwaala (Aruna Irani) seek revenge against crime boss Rakka (Amrish Puri) who cheated Jwaala and siphoned her money. They hire Rajesh to break open Rakka's treasury and steal back the money. Vikram pays Rajesh a token amount to do the job. But suddenly Inspector Amjad Khan arrests Rajesh and the court sentences Rajesh to two years imprisonment. Sheela is devastated after she realizes Rajesh was a thief.

Dr.Sandeep Kumar (Jeetendra), Inspector Ranjith (Rajinikanth) & Advocate Prakash (Rishi Kapoor) are thickest, best & childhood friends, the three of them grew up together because Prakash is often and Ranjith’s father Daga (Amrish Puri) is a smuggler who left him alone because of his honesty and took his mother & sister with him so Sandeep’s parents (Pran & Shavukar Janaki) brought them up. Ranjith is an honest police officer, Sandeep is a well known doctor in the city, Prakash is a leading criminal lawyer three of them has always clash with Daga who became a big gangster and doesn’t know that Ranjith is his son. Ranjith & Prakash always carrels with Sandeep because the only problem with Sandeep is he is very short temper, he cannot withstand himself if somebody does any injustice to anyone. One day Daga’s gangster (Guru Bachan) kidnaps and rapes Ranjith’s wife Lata (Poonam Dhillon) who is pregnant which is seen by Sandeep and he bits him very hard and takes promise from Lata that she does not reveal this secret. Daga takes advantage of this he kills the gangster and traps Sandeep in that case. Ranjith arrests Sandeep and Prakash takes up the case but Sandeep doesn’t reveal the truth to protect Lata so Prakash makes a story that Sandeep has made the crime to protect his wife to save him, he brings a girl Rekha (Bhanu Priya) as Sandeep’s wife whom Sandeep has protected from few gangsters once a while. Meanwhile Sandeep loves and really marries Rekha and Prakash also loves a thief Shanthi (Kimi Katkar) whose brother is killed by Daga and for whom she is under search. At the end Ranjith comes know the truth, he accepts Lata even though she got raped and he recognizes Daga is his father and Rekha is his sister whom Daga left in streets in the childhood. Finally Sandeep, Ranjith & Prakash join together and defeat Daga.

The main protagonist is Chander, a tourist photographer in the Indian city of Nainital living with his parents (played by Alok Nath and Kanu Gill), and best friend Johnny (played by Sanjay Narvekar). Inspector Suryadev Singh (Amrish Puri) is an honest and efficient cop in the city. He has a granddaughter Kajal (Twinkle Khanna), whom he has brought up after her parents were poisoned by his enemies, and whom he values more than his life. But Suryadev’s cousin Vishambar (Suresh Oberoi) is plotting the complete ruin of Suryadev, along with his wife and his brother in law Bhanwari (Shakti Kapoor) because Vishambar’s deceased father gives all his share of property, including a village Sundernagar, to Suryadev as Vishambar has married someone against his wishes. So Vishambar plans to kill Kajal, as then his revenge will be complete, and the property will fall into his hands since there would be no one to inherit it from Suryadev, which his son Nagendra can inherit. Gangadhar Choudhary rules a small community in rural India with an iron hand, and will never permit anyone to speak up against him. He owns most of the land surrounding his palatial home - save for the small patch of land owned by Veer Singh. He summons Veer to his house, and offers him substantial compensation for his land, but Veer refuses, and the Gangadhar has him killed. Veer's widow dies of shock, leaving behind a young Suraj to be brought up by a kindly widow Mrs. Salma Khan, who is also the mother of Iqbal.
