The film featured an ensemble cast including Rajkumar, B. Sarojadevi, Ashok, Balakrishna and Ramakrishna playing the pivotal roles. The film, produced by Dwarakish is a remake of Tamil film Dheerga Sumangali (1974). The dialogues and lyrics were written by Chi. Udaya Shankar.
The film featured original score and soundtrack composed by Rajan-Nagendra.

Rajashekhar's (Rajkumar) business partners arrive at his house on his birthday and wedding anniversary with a bouquet of flowers and arrange a meeting that evening. They announce their decision to smuggle idols of deities abroad to which Rajashekhar opposes causing a rift between them killing one of them in the process. Pursued by police, he escapes with his wife Sumathi, only to be stranded at the railway station with his wife going separating from him.

The movie explores the nuance of Oedipus Complex. The heroine, a popular theatre artist, falls in love with a rich, young man. They eventually get married and beget a child. But the heroine is bored of married life and wants to dabble in acting. The husband refuses and leaves the town with his child. The heroine gets a lucky break in cinema and becomes a household name. Years later, as fate had it, a young man falls in love with the heroine and she reciprocates his love, but as a mother. She always gives him affection and loves like a mother. She encounters her ex-husband and pleads him to show her son just for once. But as fate has it doesn’t happen, and she goes in deep depression and commits suicide, too late for the young lover who realizes that he had fallen in love with his own mother.

Ravi Varma (Rajkumar), owner of a match box factory is a widower and has lost his daughter in an accident. Recognizing that his honest employee Chandru is in a similar position, he decides to help Chandru financially. As Chandru attends training in the U.S., Ravi takes care of Chandru's charming daughter. On return, Chandru suggests changing the company's structure. The traditionalist Ravi, becomes infuriated. Protesting this, Chandru resigns and starts his own match box company and becomes the leading match box manufacturer.

Ondu Muttina Kathe revolves around a deep sea diver, played by Rajkumar, who dives into the sea in search of pearls. One day he manages to bring a shining pearl to his house. The news spreads around the village and he finds everyone wants to own it.
