The movie was silent with its own Vitaphone soundtrack and sound effects recorded on Vitaphone phonographic records, and may have been released in dual silent and sound versions. The plot is based on a Cornell Woolrich story.
Synopsis
A spoiled rich girl falls for a poor chauffeur. Their situations are changed when her family loses all their money and he wins $50,000 at a racetrack. They get married, but it's not long before she starts spending their money the way she used to spend hers.Acteurs

Breckenridge "Breck" Lee (Richard Barthelmess), jeune homme naïf du Sud, arrive à New York pour exercer le métier de journaliste. Il est engagé par The Press et son premier article concerne l’ouverture d’une nouvelle salle de jeu. Le gangster Louis J. Blanco (Clark Gable) tente de le corrompre pour le faire taire. Lee refuse et publie son article sur le casino qui est peu après fermé par la police. Agressé et frappé par des gangsters, Lee atterrit à l’hôpital. Millie (Helen Twelvetrees) is a naive young woman who marries a wealthy man from New York, Jack Maitland (James Hall). Three years later, unhappy in her marriage due to her husband's continued infidelity, she asks for and receives a divorce. Because of her pride, she does not want his money, however, she also does not want to remove her daughter from a comfortable lifestyle. She allows Jack and his mother (Charlotte Walker), to retain custody of Millie's daughter, Connie (Anita Louise). Focusing on her career, she rises through the hierarchy of the hotel where she is employed, shunning the attention of the rich banker, Jimmy Damier (John Halliday), preferring the attentions of the reporter, Tommy Rock (Robert Ames), although, due to her prior sour relationship, refuses to marry. Eventually, Millie is promoted to the head of operations for the hotel. At the same time, Tommy is offered a lucrative position at the bank by Damier, as a favor to Millie. However, at the celebration party, Millie discovers that Tommy, just like Maitland, is cheating on her.

Helen Ware, who runs a house for gangsters, is raising the son of a dead convict, who is played by Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Ware has raised Fairbanks well, making sure that he was not influenced by her gangster friends. Ware even gets Fairbanks a job as press agent. Fairbanks falls in love with a chorus girl, played by Billie Dove. When Fairbanks announces his engagement to Dove, Ware becomes infuriated because she believes that a girl of her type will urge him on to a life of crime. Her premonitions come to fruition. John Loder, who is producing Dove's show, gives her an engagement party. Fairbanks is called to work, however, and Dove attends the party alone. Loder attempts to rape Dove and she shoots him in self-defence. Despite Dove's protests, Fairbanks confesses to the murder and is convicted for manslaughter. While Fairbanks is in prison, he writes a play for Dove. Dove tries to find a producer for the play but is turned down everywhere. Knowing how much the play means to Fairbanks, she makes a deal with Claude Fleming, who is willing to produce the play only if she submits to his sexual advances. The play is a success and makes Dove a star making Fairbanks happy when he hears the news. James Crane, who had made advances to Dove's previously but had been rejected, goes to Ware and tells her everything concerning Dove's sordid affair. At first, when Ware confronts her, Dove denies everything. Dove eventually confesses and Ware promises to keep the whole affair a secret. When Fairbanks is finally released, the lovers are happily reunited.

When Mona Frentiss dies, she has her confidante "Doctor Bobs" watch over her family, especially her youngest daughter Patricia. The family has been raised in a most unconventional manner, with Mona having a much younger lover and the father Ralph keeping his own lover on the side. As Patricia grows older, she attracts the attention of her mother's former lover, the much older (than Patricia, who in the book is in her early to mid teens) Carey Scott. Patricia tempts fate with her wild ways, nearly loses her virtue to a musician aboard an ocean-going boat, and is saved in time by Carey. Realizing that he is the man for her, she settles down into an experimental marriage.
