Pagalil Oru Iravu (Tamil: பகலில் ஒரு இரவு) (English: A night in the day) is a 1979 Tamil film directed by I. V. Sasi and starring Vijayakumar, Sridevi and Seema, Major Sundarrajan

The music was composed by Ilayaraja and the songs were written by Kannadasan.

Synopsis

Seema, a doctor has a love interest on her cousin Vijayakumar. But Vijayakumar loves Sridevi, a shy and down to earth girl. So Seema sacrifices her love and so Vijayakumar gets married to Sridevi. Sridevi's mother (Pushpalatha) hides some truth about Sridevi to others. Everything goes well for Sridevi and she gets conceived, until she trips and falls from the stairs and gets aborted. Following this she gets weird and fearful dreams and memories and she is diagnosed to be suffering from retrograde hysteria. Ravikumar, brother of Seema, who returns from abroad is shocked to see Sridevi and he recollects the past.Once during the adolescent days, Sridevi encounters Ravikumar while targeting mangoes. Injured, unconscious Ravikumar is given first aid by Sridevi by tearing a piece of her short gown. Ravikumar gets attracted by her sexy appeal and unknowingly Sridevi loses her virginity to Ravikumar. Not knowing whom he was, she gets pregnant. Her mother takes her to a hill-side village to abort her baby by native treatment, due to which she loses memory of her adolescent age.

A young man Raghu sets up an explosive in a railway track to blow up a train. Raghu is a freedom fighter who wants to destroy the train in which British officers are travelling. He returns home after his successful attempt and is slammed by his rich father who is an ardent supporter of the British. Raghu insists that his country and its freedom are more important than anything. When police comes to arrest Raghu, his father hands him to them but Raghu's pregnant wife Parvati diverts the police and lets her husband escape. Raghu escapes in his bike and meets with an accident and is declared dead.

Gopalan (M. G. Soman) is a local owner of cane wholesale business as he purchases the canes from workers and sell it for high price. But he is a dishonest person as he smuggles sandalwood too in between cane business. Varuthunni (Madhu) is the chief of workers and they believe Gopalan. Varuthunni's adopted son is Ramu (Kamal Hassan) and he is in love with Sreedevi, (Seema) daughter of Narayanan, (Jose Prakash) co-worker of Varuthunni. The film opens with an illegal cockfighting competition held in a small village in central Kerala. Suddenly police enters in to the field and arrests Shivan (Mammootty), and Suku (Lalu Alex) for holding money betting. But on way, they are saved by village youths under Chellan (Bharath Gopi), a local goon, who is also a close buddy of Shivan. Both Chellan and Shivan share a strong friendship and are more like brothers. Shivan is in love with Chellan's younger sister (Seema) and Chellan and his mom have given green signal to it. Chandri ( Urvashi), the sister of Shivan, is his everything and his whole happiness revolves around her. Bhadran (Mohanlal), the younger brother of Chellan is too aggressive like him and picks up fight for every silly reasons. Its usually Shivan, who sorts out the fights that he picks up every day. Things are going very smoothy until one day Chandri gets pregnant. Chandri, in order to pacify Shivan reveals him that it is Chellan, who is responsible for this, whereas it was Thampi, her neighbor who was actually responsible. Shivan, in a sudden rage kills Chellan and surrenders at police station himself. Bhadran, but turns violent by this incident and vows to take revenge.
