Pilot Premnath is a 1978 Indian/Sri Lankan Tamil film directed by A. C. Thirulokachandar, starring Sivaji Ganesan as the eponymous character. It was an "Indo-Sri Lankan joint-venture" produced by D.M Chandrasena, T. M. Menon and M. M. Saleem.

Synopsis

Pilot Premnath (Sivaji Ganesan) has three children — two sons (Vijayakumar and JaiGanesh) and a blind daughter (Sridevi). He is closely attached to his children, especially his daughter. His wife (Malini) dies in an accident.

R. Sattanathan (Major Sundarrajan) a leading criminal lawyer and Bangalore Ramaswamy (V. K. Ramasamy), Sattanathan's professional competitor were once friends but now foes. Sattanathan has vowed that he will win a case against Ramaswamy at least once in his lifetime, for which he even makes his son Saravanan (Sivaji Ganesan) study law, so that if not him at least his son will defeat Ramaswamy. But contrary to Sattanathan's expectation Saravanan falls in love with Ramaswamy's daughter Devi (Manjula). Helping them in their love is Ramesh (Nagesh) Ramaswamy's nephew. A lot of hilarious incidents and confusions follow before the lovers are united.

Gopal Sivaji Ganesan and Gowri K. R. Vijaya are salespeople in competing organisations. They are professional rivals and end up sharing rooms in the same house belonging to an English. Naidu M. R. R. Vasu and his Kannada wife Manorama are caretakers of the house where Mohan and Gowri stay. Gopal and Gowri get married and both quit their jobs on the same day. Naidu and his wife lend them some money to start a business. Gopal's business becomes successful and Gowri and Mohan have a son and are about to have another baby. A Punjabi family led by Baldev Singh ('Major' Sundararajan) move into one of the portions. A Malayalee Muslim led by Ibrahim (V K Ramasamy) family take up residence in other part of the same house. After some initial hiccups, the four families settle down and become close friends. Gopal's secretary Kamala tries to vamp him and her brother takes a photo of the two of them together and begins to blackmail Gopal. His neighbours help him fight off the blackmailer and this seals the bond between them even more strongly. When the house owner decides to sell the house and return to England, the families buy the house together with Gopal paying Naidu's share. They call the house Bharatha Vilas, since it houses people from all parts of the country. The movie catches up with the residents of Bharatha Vilas after many years. Gopal is now even more successful and slightly arrogant about his wealth. His daughter is very close to Ibrahim's family and considers his son Hamid as her brother. Someone sends an anonymous letter about their relationship and Gopal cuts off all contact with Ibrahim and fixes his daughter's wedding with one of his relatives.

Sivaji Ganesan portrays three roles: an insecure father, a timid son and an angst-ridden twin brother. Sivaji Ganesan, a lawyer with a scarred face, gets married to Pandari Bai. The couple lead a happy life and Pandari Bai gives birth to twin brothers, a son with a scarred face (Also Ganesan) like his father and a brother (Also Ganesan). Their father unable to tolerate his eldest son's face leaves him under the custody of another person and tells his wife that the first child is dead. As years pass by, the father becomes a justice and his younger son, a happy-go-lucky college-going timid son, falls in love with Jayalalithaa. In the meanwhile, the elder son comes to know about his family and tries to meet his mother and brother but he is asked by his father not to reveal his identity to them. M. N. Nambiar, a man once punished by the father, kidnaps the younger son in order to take revenge on him. In the end, the elder son rescues his brother, killing M. N. Nambiar. He succumbs to his injuries and dies on the lap of his mother (Pandari Bai). This film was the first Tamil film recommended for an Oscar.
