Synopsis

Adèle est une jeune fille qui n'a connu que des mésaventures sentimentales jusqu'ici. Un soir, alors qu'elle s'apprête à sauter d'un pont parisien, un inconnu l'aborde : Gabor, lanceur de couteaux professionnel, lui propose de devenir sa partenaire, puisqu'elle tient si peu à la vie. Adèle se jette à l'eau, suivie par Gabor, qui la sauve. Elle accepte finalement l'offre de Gabor et reprend goût à la vie, portée par une incroyable chance qui semble unir Adèle et Gabor. Ils écument les music-halls et casinos à travers l'Europe, toujours couronnés de succès. Mais la mélancolie d'Adèle reprend le dessus, et elle quitte son partenaire pour s'enfuir avec un jeune marié grec désabusé, à bord d'une chaloupe de secours du bateau de croisère où ils se produisaient. La romance ne dure qu'un temps, la chance s'évapore aussitôt, son radeau vogue à la dérive, avant qu'Adèle soit recueillie sur une base militaire. De son côté, Gabor blesse sa nouvelle partenaire lors de son numéro. Débarqué à Istanbul, il sombre petit-à-petit dans la misère et erre dans la ville à la recherche de son ancienne cible. Croyant l'apercevoir, il est renversé dans sa poursuite par un camion. Sorti de l'hôpital, mal-en-point, il décide de mettre fin à ses jours en sautant d'un pont. Au moment fatidique, Adèle ressurgit et ils se promettent de ne plus se séparer.
