Shabana is a blockbuster Pakistani Urdu colour film produced by A. Hameed and directed by Nazar Shabab. The film cast Shahid, Babra Sharif and Waheed Murad. The film was released on November 12, 1976 in Pakistani cinemas. The film completed more than 100 weeks on Pakistani cinemas and became a "Diamond Jubilee film". During the same year two more Diamond Jubilee Urdu films were released: Nadeem's Talash and Rahat Kazmi's Aaj aur kal. Talash was directed by Pervaiz Malik. This film was released during the "struggling days of Waheed". In Shabana, Waheed Murad had been cast in a secondary role. For Babra, the film gave a boost to her career and she won her first Nigar award as best actress. Before that in 1975 she had received a Special Nigar award for the film Mera naam hai mohabbat. The best actress award was taken away by Shabnam for the film Zeenat.

Synopsis

The story of the film is based on two sisters Shabana and Farzana (both the roles played by Babra Sharif), who have similar faces but different personality traits. Farzana is reserved and dutiful girl, whereas her sister Shabana is a lively, enthusiastic and bubbly type. Shahid played a role of a rich man's spoilt son and a playboy. Waheed Murad played a role of a suspicious husband.

Insaniyat is a story of a dedicated doctor (Waheed Murad) and a faithful wife (Zeba). Waheed leaves the country for abroad to get higher degree in medical sciences whereas his beloved Zeba waits for his return. Before his return, Zeba is forcefully married to Tariq Aziz by her parents. On wedding night, it is discovered that Tariq is a cancer patient. After returning home, Waheed saves his patient's (Tariq Aziz) life who was married to his beloved. Firdous played the role of a mad girl under medical treatment in Waheed's clinic.

The film is a tragedy based on a tawaif (courtesan) 'Anjuman' played by Rani, who is a "tawaiif" who flirts with the emotions of a wealthy Santosh Kumar and later falls in love with his younger brother played by Waheed Murad. In order to save his older brother's marriage Waheed's character decides to frequent Anjuman's "kotha" in an "exchange" demanded by Anjuman, although being in love with another girl (played by Deeba). Sabiha plays the role of wife of the older brother's character in the film, and eventually implores Anjuman to forsake her own love so that Waheed's Character can live happily. At the end, Anjuman (Rani) has to face a fate worse than death, where she is invited to sing at the wedding of her Love. Lovelorn and disappointed Anjuman offers a woeful song, as she has swallowed poison, and dies at the feet of her love.
