Sutradhar (Hindi: सूत्रधार) translation: Impresario) is an Indian colour Drama film of 1978. It was a feature film directed by Chandrakant Joshi starring Smita Patil, Girish Karnad and Nana Patekar in the lead roles. This film is dedicated to the memory of Smita Patil, who died before the film was released.
Synopsis
A cruel Zamindar, the local landlord, commits atrocities on the villagers. Young Kumar watches helplessly his father being beaten-up by his goons at his behest. He grows to become a teacher. Prerna, the only daughter of the school headmaster, comes back after studying in Calcutta to meet Kumar, her childhood friend. She admires his courage and determination to stand-up against the Zamindar. She joins Kumar in his efforts to bring together youngsters to form an organization for the welfare of village. Soon both get married. Kumar successfully contests election to become the new head. Prerna notices that Kumar is fast becoming the man he hated the most.Acteurs

Un instituteur et son épouse arrivent dans un village de la région d'Hyderabad sur lequel une fratrie de zamindars (propriétaires terriens) fait régner la terreur. Le docteur Rao (Girish Karnad), un vétérinaire, vient fonder une coopérative laitière dans un village où les producteurs de lait sont en majorité des dalits (intouchables). Il doit faire face à Mishraji (Amrish Puri), qui achète à bas prix le lait de tous les villageois, mais aussi au chef du village (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) qui souhaite utiliser la coopérative naissante pour renforcer son pouvoir. Rao s'aperçoit vite qu'il a besoin du soutien de la population dalit pour réussir son entreprise. Bindu (Smita Patil), une femme de caractère appartenant à cette communauté, sympathise avec lui et accepte d'y participer, entrainant avec elle les autres femmes. Mais Bhola, dont la forte personnalité fait le leader de la communauté, reste sur ses gardes. Sa méfiance s'aggrave lorsqu'il découvre qu'un des associés de Rao a une aventure avec une femme de sa caste. Lorsque Rao finit par convaincre Bhola, l'ensemble du village se rallie à sa cause et des élections sont organisées pour désigner le président de la coopérative. Le vainqueur est un dalit. Mais le chef du village n'accepte pas cette remise en cause de son pouvoir. Il trouve un allié en la personne de Mishraji dont l'entreprise est menacée par le développement de la coopérative. Mishraji parvient à convaincre Bindu, en grande difficulté financière, de prétendre que Rao l'a séduite. Rao et son équipe doivent quitter le village, mais la coopérative ne périclite pas pour autant : les producteurs de lait continuent son œuvre.

In a remote village at Karnataka-Maharashtra border in India, the poor residents follow Devdasi tradition according to which young girls are given up in the service of Goddess Yellamma. The landlords, priests and other men take advantage of these young girls and pimps like Veerapppan take them to brothels in Bombay. Bhashya, a laborer and his wife Ahnami lead an attempt at awakening against the practice by deciding to save Laksmi from becoming a Devdasi with the help of Masterji, going against the powerful feudal lord Desai.

Sulabha Mahajan (played by Smita Patil) is a woman who dreams to step out of the four walls of the house, assume greater responsibility as a citizen and play an important role in shaping the society. Ravi, a progressive schoolteacher in a small village helps fight an epidemic by getting his students inoculated. He incurs the wrath of local witchdoctor in the process. The witchdoctor gets his chance when Rekha, the pregnant wife of Ravi comes to him after the death of their child. He demands a human sacrifice. Sethji (Shreeram Lagoo) is a widowed businessman who lives a comfortable life with his only daughter, Hansa, his son-in-law, Rahul (Amol Palekar), and a grandson, Munna. Rahul is Sethji's right-hand man, and his nephew Dinesh (Girish Karnad) is his assistant. Over time, petty rivalries and jealousies have grown in the family, and Sethji and Rahul feel that Dinesh is trying to undermine the business. They make a plan to get rid of him without attracting any attention to themselves and succeed, but the after-effects are not kind towards Sethji's health, which grows worse eventually leading to his untimely death. Shortly thereafter, Hansa also dies, leaving her husband Rahul to look after the business on his own. Things start to turn controversial once Rahul begins an affair with the maidservant Janki (Smita Patil), and it is soon revealed that Hansa's death may not have been a suicide, but was a cover-up. As the mysteries start to unfold, they leave a scarring emotional impact on Rahul, and test his relationship with his late wife's family and his new lover.

In order to improve their lifestyle, village near Badaun, based Ghulam Hasan (Farooq Shaikh) decides to re-locate to Bombay, on the insistence of his close friend Lalulal Tiwari (Jalal Agha). The story revolves around a tribal caste called the Thakar. Nagya (Mohan Agashe) is a drummer who has a passion for being a "pure one" (punyavant). He meets Chindhi (Smita Patil), who has abandoned her husband as she considers him useless. They both fall in love and strive hard to be united. Once when Nagya goes to jungle for wood-cutting, a queen honey bee attacks him and one of his eyes is injured. He decides to take revenge. The beehives are located high on a nearby difficult to climb peak {Lingoba}. He decides to cut all the beehives so that the queen-bee runs away. Meanwhile, Chindhi becomes pregnant with Nagya, but she still supports his dangerous attempt to climb the peak. Nagya then climbs the peak and cuts the hives. Chindhi is waiting at the base of the peak, but the disturbed honey-bees attack her and she dies in the incident. Nagya, in search of Queen honey-bee, loses his own queen[wife] in the end. This is a classic paradox, where he succeeds (Jait re jait, means WIN-WIN) in his revenge, but loses wife.
