Tamr Henna is a 1957 Egyptian musical drama film directed by Hussein Fawzy. The film stars some of Egypt’s most prominent stars of the era including Ahmed Ramzy, Rushdy Abaza, Fayza Ahmed, Naima Akef, and Zeinat Sedki. (IMDB) Set in a time where gypsies still roamed Egypt freely and had their own areas of living, this movie tells the tale of a rich man falling in love with a gypsy and transforming her into a socialite in order for her to be accepted by his family, and so he can win a bet. However, as the movie progresses a love triangle forms between the gypsy, the rich man, and the carnival’s strong man, and that leads to heightened drama.
Synopsis
The movie takes place in Egypt 1957 where gypsies still roamed and had designated living areas where they could go about their lives. In this particular gypsy living area there is a carnival where Tamr Henna, the main character, works along with the Hassan, the carnivals strong man and her love interest in the beginning of the movie. During the first part of the movie we see Tamr Henna working as a belly dancer and being coveted by all sorts of men be them rich or poor, and we simultaneously see Hassan’s strong sense of jealousy. During one of Tamr Henna’s belly dancing performances a rich man by the name of Ahmed sees here and sparks up a conversation. Hassan is then not pleased and vows to kill him so Tamr Henna goes to Ahmed’s mansion to warn him but gets caught by Ahmed’s father who sees her as nothing but a useless gypsy. Tamr Henna manages to escape the make shift prison Ahmed’s dad locks her up in and warns Ahmed. The two then start meeting up and Ahmed convinces Tamr Henna to live with him in his mansion and promises to transform her into a socialite. He changes her name to Yasmine and buys her new clothes and in the process convinces his father that she is of a very wealthy family. Meanwhile, Hassan searches for Tamr Henna but is unable to find her. As the movie progresses Ahmed’s father starts coveting Tamr Henna for himself, because of the money he thinks she possess, and so he hosts a party in which he will propose to her in. During this glamorous party hosted for Tamr Henna, Hassan manages to find her, thanks to the help of Ahmed’s ex-fiancé and socialite Maysa, and vows that he will kill her. She finds out and outs herself as a fake and tells everyone her true occupation and origin, and flees to try to find Ahmed only to over hear him talking about the bet that he has made with his neighbor in order to fool his father. Tamr Henna feels devastated and runs to her room only to find Hassan waiting for her with a knife in hand. She professes her love to him but he manages to stab her and while she is bleeding she tells him that she still loves him and he carries her back to the carnival, and it is implied that Tamr Henna heals and ends up marrying Hassan.Acteurs

Fouad Bek is married to Imtethal and has a daughter, Thoraya, who lives in Istanbul with her grandparents. Before Imtethal's mother dies, she reveals a secret she has been keeping to her daughter. She also has a son out of wedlock, and tells her where he is. Imtehal meets her brother, Zaki, who tries to trick her and steal from her. He even threatens her with letters. One day, Fouad finds a letter from Zaki. He misunderstands what the letter discloses and thinks that his wife is having an affair with this man. Thoraya returns to Egypt and finds that her parents have divorced.

Faten Hamama plays Hoda, a poor woman who leaves an orphanage to live with three young men (Ahmed, Ali, and Ramzi) in a room on a building rooftop. The three of these men fall in love with her, but she prefers Ahmed, who is played by Omar Sharif, and the others accept that and stay loyal to their friendship. When, one day, Hoda gets sick, the three men urgently work hard to gather enough money to pay for her surgery. The film is not conclusive about what happens to Hoda, but she is supposed to live with her sickness for the rest of her life and can hardly work or get married.
