During the German occupation of Norway, nightclub owner Tor Lindblom (Såheim) makes a fortune by collaborating with the Germans. With the help of SS-Sturmbandfürer Krüger (Otto), he plans to exploit the construction of a new aluminium plant for his own benefit. At the same time he is also romantically involved with Eva Karlsen (Nystrøm), a singer at the nightclub, who is a British double agent.

En 1997, Ole Bornedal a tourné aux États-Unis, le remake de son thriller Night Watch (Nattevagten). Peu convaincu, il est revenu au Danemark réaliser des films forts et personnels comme ce Deliver Us from Evil, lancinant. Au départ un accident: Lars, ivre renverse une passante et fait endosser le crime à un immigrant.
