Max Rée (parfois crédité Max Ree) est un costumier et directeur artistique danois, né le 7 octobre 1889 à Copenhague (Danemark), mort le 7 mars 1953 à Los Angeles (Californie).

Biographie

Après des études d'architecture dans sa ville natale, Max Rée travaille au théâtre à Berlin avec Max Reinhardt, au début des années 1920. Puis, émigré aux États-Unis, il est directeur artistique à Broadway, pour la revue Earl Carroll's Vanities of 1924, représentée de septembre 1924 à début janvier 1925.

En 1925, il s'installe à Hollywood et débute comme costumier sur trois films sortis en 1926, Le Torrent de Monta Bell et La Tentatrice de Fred Niblo, tous deux avec Greta Garbo, ainsi que La Lettre écarlate de Victor Sjöström, avec Lillian Gish. Il est également directeur artistique sur des films américains sortis à partir de 1929.

Parmi ses autres films notables, citons La Symphonie nuptiale d'Erich von Stroheim (1928, avec le réalisateur et Fay Wray), The Divine Lady de Frank Lloyd (1929, avec Corinne Griffith et Victor Varconi) et La Ruée vers l'Ouest de Wesley Ruggles (version 1931, avec Richard Dix et Irene Dunne). Ce dernier remporte en 1931 l'Oscar du meilleur film et permet à Max Rée de gagner l'Oscar des meilleurs décors.

Son avant-dernier film, comme costumier, est Le Songe d'une nuit d'été de William Dieterle (1935, avec Ian Hunter et Verree Teasdale), où il retrouve Max Reinhardt coréalisateur. Quasiment retiré ensuite, il revient toutefois pour un ultime film sorti en 1947, Carnegie Hall d'Edgar George Ulmer (avec Marsha Hunt et William Prince), comme costumier et directeur artistique.

Il meurt six ans après (en 1953) d'un cancer.

Middle aged Mrs. Livingston Baldwin Crane (Edna May Oliver) is selected to serve on a jury. The case is the murder trial of ex-showgirl Yvette Gordon (Jill Esmond), accused of killing her rich elderly husband. Throughout the trial Mrs. Crane is outspoken but is able to ask the witnesses candid and important questions. At the end of the trial, Mrs. Crane casts the sole “not guilty” vote, causing a discussion. After lots of convincing and several votes, the count is ten not guilty to two guilty. During the deliberations, the wealthy Mrs. Crane secretly hires a detective agency to further investigate the case. They prove that Chauncy, Mr. Crane's nephew, paid the maid, Mrs. Snow, to lie under oath so Chauncy could inherit his uncle's entire estate.

An actress, Peggy, is stranded on the island of Caparoja, which is ruled by a local dictator, Sangredo. Johnny falls in love with Peggy and plans to marry her, rescuing her from her exile. However, Sangredo hires Peggy to perform at a party he is throwing, when the original singer, Carlotta, backs out. When Johnny finds out about the agreement, he misunderstands their relationship, and blows up at her. Peggy gets furious in turn over the fact he could believe that about her, and calls the wedding off.

Not long after the death of his first wife, Walter Fairchild becomes engaged to Florence Wendell. Florence ignores the warnings of Gilbert Gaylord, who is also interested in marrying her, that she doesn't know what she is getting herself into; that no woman will ever be able to fill the void in Fairchild's life left by the death of his wife. After they are married, Fairchild and Florence have some contention as she buys into the warnings given her by Gaylord. To appease her, they move out of the house he shared with his first wife, and allows her to furnish the new home. Sensing that he and his new wife need some time alone together to start their new lives, he sends his seven-year-old son, Walter Jr., to a boarding school in Switzerland. After Florence becomes pregnant, Fairchild is notified that is son is very ill, and will most likely not recover. Despite Florence's pleas for him not to leave her, he travels to his son's side. As he leaves, Florence tells him not to return.
