Monroe Owsley (August 11, 1900 – June 7, 1937) was an American stage and film actor.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia to an aspiring actress, Gertrude Owsley, he started taking acting classes when he was a teenager and made his Broadway debut in the 1920s. His film debut occurred in 1928 with The First Kiss, starring Fay Wray. This was following by the Philip Barry film Holiday in 1930. A later version had his part portrayed by Lew Ayres. Soon after, he was cast opposite actresses such as Clara Bow, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Crawford, Gloria Swanson, Mae West and Kay Francis.

Ellen Neal is hired as servant in the house of the wealthy Winfield family by the butler, Thomas Wroxton, who covets her romantically. Wroxton rules the household staff like a tyrant, demanding a large cut of their weekly wages as his "commission". To his great irritation, Neal resists his advances. Instead, during the family's vacation in New England she becomes romantically involved with the Winfields' son, Richard, who is a college student. They secretly marry and she falls pregnant by him before he returns to college. When the Winfields are told by a vengeful Wroxton that she is pregnant they are initially sympathetic until discovering that the child is their own grandson. A prolonged divorce suit then follows until the couple are finally reconciled.

To celebrate their six-month anniversary, Long Island socialites Tony and Carlotta Milburn arrange a wild drinking party with friends, culminating in a stop at the restaurant owned by Faronea. They are unaware that Faronea is conspiring with Baptiste Bouclier, the chauffeur of party host Vic Huling, to kidnap Vic. The next morning the Milburns awake hung over to find Vic dead from a gunshot through the heart and his wife Bette missing. Tony calls his friend, district attorney Danny Harrison to investigate. Bette arrives with Billy Arliss at whose home she had slept. Because of their excessive drinking, no one can remember anything about what had happened the night before. As circumstantial evidence mounts against Tony, he calls in hypnotist Professor Karl Jones to help everyone try to recover their memories. Une petite ville d'Allemagne, dans les années 1920, pendant la République de Weimar : Hans Pinneberg travaille chez un marchand de blé, Emil Kleinholz. Son patron apprenant cela, Hans préfère démissionner. Le couple part alors à Berlin et s'installe provisoirement chez la mère de Hans, Mia Pinneberg. Celle-ci s'est remariée avec Holger Jachman, un demi-mondain un peu escroc. Hans trouve du travail dans un grand magasin et bientôt, le couple déménage pour éviter la promiscuité créée par le fait que les époux Jachman dirigent un « club de rencontres ». Au moment où sa femme met au monde un garçon, Hans est licencié pour avoir mécontenté un client. C'est alors qu'un ancien collègue, Heilbutt, lui propose de le seconder dans une affaire qu'il vient de monter.
