Nadav Levitan (21 April 1945 – 9 January 2010) was an Israeli film director, screenwriter, writer and songwriter. He directed nine films between 1981 and 1999. His film Stalin's Disciples was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival. He was married to Israeli singer Chava Alberstein, who had recorded many of his songs. Levitan died on 10 January 2010, of an undisclosed lung ailment.

The film is set on a modern kibbutz as the spectre of an Arab invasion lurks in the background and financial pressures are breaking down traditional communal values. A series of fragile, interwoven stories mirror this disintegration of collective ideals: a longstanding friendship between two 40-year-old bachelors (Danni Bassan and Meir Swissa) ends tragically when one decides to get married; a bereaved father is embarrassed to find himself attracted to his dead son's girlfriend (Dorit Lev-Ari); and a mother (Chava Alberstein) perpetuates the memory of her dead son by tending to his room as a memorial. The film follows a married couple, Leah (Chava Alberstein) and Ya'akov (Alexander Peleg), who live on a kibbutz in the 1970s. Over a period of ten years, all of their attempts to conceive a child have been unsuccessful and their marriage begins to disintegrate as each suffers silently and blames the other. Their difficulties are compounded – and the damaging effects of the lack of privacy in an insular communal environment underscored – when their inability to conceive becomes a matter of public knowledge and gossip among the kibbutz members.
