Spencer Williams (July 14, 1893 – December 13, 1969) was an American actor and filmmaker. He was best known for playing Andy in the Amos 'n Andy television show and for directing the 1941 race film The Blood of Jesus. Williams was a pioneer African-American film producer and director.

Bad News Johnson, a con artist from Memphis, Tennessee, arrives in Dallas, Texas, accompanied by his dim sidekick July Jones with only twenty-five cents between them. Johnson is constantly exasperated at Jones’ deficient perspicacity, and at one point he comments Jones is so dense that he probably thinks "Veronica Lake is some kind of summer resort." The duo arrange to become boarders at the home of Louella "Mama Lou" Holiday, who is fooled into believing Johnson is an acting teacher named Whitney Vanderbilt; Jones takes the alias of Cornbread Green. Mrs. Holiday agrees to give the men free room and board if they will provide poise lessons to her daughter, an aspiring beauty queen named Honey Dew. The lessons pay off and Honey Dew wins the beauty contest, but problems arise when Mrs. Holiday’s husband, Papa Sam, decides to hold a party for the new beauty queen at a disreputable juke joint.

Gertie LaRue (Francine Everett) is a nightclub entertainer from the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. She arrives on the Caribbean island of "Rinidad" to perform as the headliner in a revue at the Paradise Hotel. Gertie has earned the nickname "Dirty Gertie" for the casual nature in which she entices and then humiliates men. On the island she attracts the attention of two US military officers—a soldier and a sailor—whom she nicknames "Tight Pants" and "High Pockets," respectively. The men enjoy sharing Gertie’s affections. However, Diamond Joe, the owner of the hotel, finds himself falling for Gertie and begins to shower her with gifts. Gertie also attracts the attention of two missionaries, Mr. Christian and Ezra Crumm, who keep watch on Gertie’s activities. However, a former boyfriend from Harlem tracks Gertie to the island. Unable to possess her, the ex-boyfriend kills her while insisting that he loves her.

Go Down Death takes place in an African-American community where the criminal boss Big Jim Bottoms (Spencer Williams) runs a successful juke joint. The arrival of a new preacher (Samuel H. James) to the town results in many of Big Jim’s customers leaving the juke joint in favor of attending church. Big Jim arranges for the preacher to be photographed in compromising situations with three attractive women. Aunt Caroline, Big Jim’s adoptive mother, becomes aware of the scheme and tries to prevent Big Jim from carrying out his blackmail scheme. There is a physical struggle between Aunt Caroline and Big Jim, resulting in Aunt Caroline collapsing after being struck. Aunt Caroline dies from her injuries, but Big Jim escapes arrest. But following Aunt Caroline’s funeral, Big Jim’s conscience haunts him with visions of eternal damnation in Hell. His body is later discovered in a canyon and the photographs of the preacher are nowhere to be found.

Dans un village de campagne avec une forte population afro-américaine, un groupe confessionnel tient une messe baptismale sur la rive d'une rivière : Martha (Cathryn Caviness), une fidèle récemment mariée, est immergée. Cependant, le mari de Martha, Ras (Spencer Williams), n'est pas présent à cette messe ; il affirme qu'il était à la chasse alors qu'il a braconné le sanglier d'un voisin. Une fois chez eux, Ras tire accidentellement sur Martha en laissant tomber son fusil. La congrégation religieuse se réunit au chevet de Martha et prie pour son rétablissement. Alors que Martha est toujours convalescente, un ange (Rogenia Goldthwaite) apparaît et prend son âme avec lui. Martha est amenée au carrefour entre le Paradis et l'Enfer où elle est d'abord séduite par le rusé Judas Green, agissant pour le compte de Satan. Martha suit Judas dans une boîte de nuit où un acrobate et un chanteur de jazz donnent un spectacle. Judas fait en sorte que le patron de l'établissement, Rufus Brown, emploie Martha. L'ange revient voir Martha et lui enjoint de fuir. Au cours de sa fuite, Martha est prise à partie par un patron de boîte de nuit qui est persuadé que Martha est une pickpocket qui vient de le dérober. À l'issue de la course poursuite qui s'ensuit, Martha parvient jusqu'au carrefour ; Satan est déjà présent et l'attend. L'ange prend la protection de Martha, la foule qui la poursuivait part dans une autre direction. Le panneau situé au carrefour se transforme en la vision de Jésus-Christ sur la croix, le sang du Christ coule sur le visage de Martha. Elle se réveille et découvre qu'elle est chez elle, à nouveau en bonne santé. Martha retrouve son mari, maintenant devenu un homme pieux. L'ange bénit le mariage de Martha et Ras.

Bob Blake (Herb Jeffries) and his sidekick Rusty (Lucius Brooks) are two cowboys riding across the countryside in search of adventure. They come across a ranch where it appears a murder has taken place but they find the victim of the crime, Jim Dennison (Leonard Christmas), still alive. Dennison is hiding in fear of his life after what had taken place at the ranch. The story concerns events in the life of Doc Clayburn, who returns with his medicine show and young daughter, Carolina, to the country where 20 years before he had been a rider with a gang of outlaws and assisted in a gold robbery. The gold was hidden when all but Doc were killed in a fight with a posse, and never recovered. When Doc is on his way to recover the gold and wipe out the memory of those early days and his straying from the straight and narrow, his caravan, which had been trailed by a rival gang, is attacked and he is mortally wounded. Just before he dies, Doc gives a map of the gold cache to Jeff Kincaid, a younger rider whom he entrusts with the plan of finding the gold and restoring it to its rightful owners. In doing this, Jeff encounters the heavies, and Mistletoe and Crawfish supply the comedy relief.
