The film is an adaptation that combines William Shakespeare's plays Henry IV, Part 1 and Henry IV, Part 2 and sets them in contemporary Los Angeles. The screenplay was adapted by Dr. Ayanna Thompson, Professor of English at Arizona State University, retaining Shakespeare's original language. According to Lennix, the film is told "from the perspective of black people, acted primarily by black people, and it’s from the black point of view"; he nevertheless describes Shakespeare's themes, and the film's, as "universal". Thompson describes the script as being "about the politics and political manoeuvring within the African-American community".

L'histoire se déroule en 2517, à une époque où les hommes ont fui la Terre pour coloniser de nouvelles planètes après un voyage de plusieurs décennies. Certaines planètes sont très avancées, mais beaucoup connaissent des conditions similaires à celles de la Conquête de l'Ouest américain au XIX siècle. Cet univers mélange de nombreux éléments des cultures terrestres : les billets de banque portent des symboles chinois, hébreux et arabes ; les deux planètes principales de l'alliance sont Sihnon (Sino, pour chinois) et Londinium (pour Londres) ; tout le monde parle couramment l'anglais et le mandarin, les confessions religieuses sont multiples, etc.
