Rishi is a 2001 Indian Tamil film, written and directed by Sundar C.. The film stars Sarath Kumar, Meena, Prakash Raj and Sanghavi in lead roles, has music scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja and was released on 16 February 2001. This movie did well and was a surprise hit.

Synopsis

Rishi (Sarathkumar) is a professional thief working for Satya (Arun Pandiyan). On one of his missions, he happens to watch a minister (Devan) kill a television reporter who is about to expose him. Rishi takes off with a floppy the reporter hands to him before dying and the minister, naturally, wants it back. Things get confusing because of Velu (Sarathkumar), who looks like Rishi and gets into trouble. .Meanwhile, Rishi turns over a new leaf when one of his tasks ends up in a singer Nandhini (Sangavi) being blinded. He starts taking care of her but Sathya is unwilling to let him go.

Two villages on either side of a river are always feuding as the headmen Veerasamy (Vinu Chakravarthy) and Sethupathy (FEFSI Vijayan) have personal enmity. Due to some misunderstanding, Sethupathy’s children die and the blame falls on Veerasamy. Saravanan (Vishal) is a person in Ooty who runs a business of gathering people for politicians. One day he met Maya (Hansika) and fell for her. However, Rajshekar (Santhanam) also falls in love with her. Saravanan convinced Rajshekar to not fall for Maya by talking about the expenses high class people require. Rajshekar is a police inspector. Due to several mishaps caused, he was fired and started working as a hotel doorman. He was shocked to find Saravanan and Maya going out together. He asked Saravanan how he made Maya to fall in love with him. As Saravanan finished his story it was revealed that it was Saravanan who indirectly caused those mishaps to Rajshekar. Rajshekar enraged hired Kumaran (Vaibhav), who is a specialist in breaking other's love. Kumaran then sends Andrea Jeremiah who shows an edited photo of her and Saravanan together and how a child mistook Saravanan for her father. This causes a conflict in the relationship of Saravanan and Maya. Due to love failure Saravanan consumed alcohol and was unconscious. Kumaran who was also at the bar helped Saravanan and dropped him at his house. Saravanan's mother, Thulasi (Tulasi) who was ashamed of Saravanan's behaviour send him to meet his father Aalavanthan (Prabhu) and his younger brother Shakti (Sathish) at Madurai.There they meet Alavanthan and rejoins him. They also come to know that Kumaran is also the son of Alavanthan's ex- lover. Alavanthan reveals to his sons that they have 3 aunts (Ramya Krishnan), (Aishwarya), (Kiran Rathod). Alavanthan wants his sons to marry the daughters of their aunts so that their family could reunite once and for all. At first Saravanan hesitates but when he finds Maya is also a daughter of his aunt he agrees to the plan. The village people mistook them as police posted to their village, which helps the trio to sneak into their aunts house. There their uncles help them to create affection to their daughters. Their aunts daughters also starts to reciprocate love to the trio. Their elder aunt (Ramya Krishnan) decides to participate in the MLA election in their provinces, but villan Pasupathy current MLA of the provinces and ex-servant of Alavanthan's family provokes her by saying that if he lose to her he will work at her home as servant but if she loses her daughter Maya will be married to his son. Saravanan then helps his aunt to win the elections. However a few days before the elections Saravanan's aunts find out that saravanan's father is their brother Alavanthan who was seen as the murderer of their father. their hatred towards Alavanthaan results in them getting Saravanan and his brothers caught in police and Alavanthaan is hurt by his sisters' harsh words at him. He suddenly got a heart attack and is admitted in the hosipital. As Saravanan and his brothers are stuck in jail, his aunt had lost many of the peoples hope for voting her due to Pasupathy's evil plans in causing misunderstandings. Then Sarvanan uses RDX, to stop Pasputhy's evil plans. Then when Pasaputhy tries to bribe people with money, Sarvanan and Kumaran cause some mishap and the tables turn giving Periya Poonu the edge. There Pasupathy comes with a mob and tries to kill the whole family and take Maya, but Sarvanan and Maya unite in a different location, and then fights Pasupathy and his son giving the victory. It was also revieled that Pasupathy killed Aalavanthan's father not Aalavanthan. There Aalavanthan and the whole family unite, and Maya weds Saravanan.

Naattamai (Sarathkumar) is a very kind-hearted, disciplined man. He sits on the ancestral throne in his village to do justice (similar to panchayat). He hears all the cases and gives solutions and punishments to the wrong-doers. His wife, Khushboo admires and respects him a lot. His brothers Pasupathi (sarathkumar) and Raja Ravindra fear for him and also have a lot of respect for him as he has brought them up as his children. The young Sarathkumar marries Meena, daughter of an industrialist. She at first never liked Naatamai and her husband for being so timid before his brother but later transforms after knowing his greatness from her father.Raja Ravindra loves his paternal cousin(Ponnambalam)'s daughter (Sanghavi). In the flashback, Periya Naatamai(Vijayakumar) father of naatamai orders Ponnambalam to marry his servant's daughter whom he raped, though he is his sister's son. His brother-in-law shoots at him as he is disappointed by his verdict.Enraged Periya Naatamai gives his final verdict before dying to abandon their family and whoever visits his house will receive the same punishment and also not to share even a glass of water with them. Ponnambalam from then builds envy on his uncle's family and waits for an opportunity to take revenge on them. He plans to bring a lady (Subhashri) as a teacher to the school in the village and tells her to make young Sarathkumar fall for her. She does so to save her father who is in the hands of Ponnambalam. He kills her and makes the villagers believe that Sarathkumar has done this. Naatamai sentences 10 years of exile for his brother's family. Now Ponnambalam comes to know of his daughter's love and tries to kill Raja Ravindra with the help of his goons. Sarathkumar goes in rescue of him and pregnant Meena goes to Naatamai to convey this message. Manorama rushes to Nattamai and reveals the truth and tells that he punished his brother without committing any mistake. Naatamai takes revenge on Ponnambalam and dies on knowing that he gave a wrong verdict. Now younger Sarathkumar is shown taking the ancestral throne from his brother.

Rajinikanth finds himself to be an orphan. He travels from his village to Madras. There he meets Janakaraj, who gives him a job. By some magical situation, Rajni discovers himself to be a son of a dead millionaire—through Visu. Visu is the guardian of Rajni's father's trust. Rambha is Visu's daughter and she is appointed as the accountant for Rajni for 30 days.

The film is about Prabhu (Prabhu Deva) and Mani (Manivannan) who earn money through dubious means to support a few orphaned children. They steal a diamond but while escaping, Mani stuffs the diamond into a toy sitting in a car. Chasing the toy takes them to the house of K.D.Chandrasekhar (S. S. Chandran), a rich man in Ooty and with Mani posing as the longlost husband of KD's sister, they enter the household. Pooja (Maheshwari), KD's daughter, falls in love with Prabhu but just as he is being engaged to her, he finds out that her sister Indu (Meena) is the woman of his dreams, the woman he had lost his heart to after seeing her for a few minutes in Coimbatore. Meena bared fully So, he takes off his beard to assume a new identity as Deva, Prabhu's brother and proceeds to woo Indu.
