Synopsis
Surya (Ajith) has been brought up in the army barracks in Ooty, ever since his mother(Sukanya) handed him over as a baby to a brigadier (Nasser). She tells the officer the reason for her action but the audience is not allowed to hear it at this point. Surya grows up to be a patriotic youth and the best soldier in his class. He falls in love with Indu (Simran), the daughter of an army officer. Indu's parents accept her choice of husband but soon after, her father dies in a bomb blast while her mother loses her life on seeing her husband's body. Not wishing to lose her husband too in war, Indu asks Surya to choose between her and the army.Acteurs

Ajith is Red (it stands for Revolution, Education, Development), an orphan who has since grown up to be the local don in Madurai. Naturally he possesses a heart of gold and when not bashing up bad guys, he spends his time forcing schools to accept students without donations and taking care of orphans. Cheeni (Salim Ghouse) is his biggest enemy. Red falls for Gayatri (Priya Gill), the daughter of his friend and confidante Narayanan (Manivannan) and helps her without her knowledge. She too likes him but wants him to give up his life of violence. Meanwhile, a reporter (Rajesh) for Ananda Vikatan begins to serialise Red's story under the name Aadi and it becomes quite the rage among readers.

Sridhar (Ajith Kumar) has been trying to become a music director for eight years. Kannan (Prashanth), a young music shop employee dreams of his dreamgirl with gold anklets. He sees a running girl's leg and finds he has found his girl and follows her with his anklets. Kannan goes to a music college to repair musical instruments and a group of college girls led by Gayatri (Simran) the girl which Kannan found as his dreamgirl approach him to request him to not to repair the instruments all they are very old and unfit to use for the music contest. Gayathri once sees Kannan getting money from one of the musical bands who has come to participate in the contest. On the day of the contest Gayathri and her team are shocked that the song which they have composed was stolen by other troop and she misunderstands that Kannan has stolen and sold their work for money despite Kannan's protest that he is innocent. Kannan lends the love poems which he had written for her to sing for the contest. Gayathri gets the song and sings which wins her the prize. Gayathri understands that Kannan has no role in the stealing of the song and he got money from the troop for fixing their repaired musical instruments. Gayathri now realised her blunder for hurting him and rushes to apologize and accept his love. Kannan gets news that his father was injured and rushes to his home.

Ganesh (Parthiban), the product of a intercaste marriage, loses several prospective brides due to this and spends his time dreaming of marriage. On a busride to Chengalpattu to take up a promotion as bank manager, he is involved in an accident. The scene shifts to three months later when he finally shows up at Chengalpattu. Nandini (Devayani), living in the house opposite his, showers affection on him, giving him coffee, providing him with hot water, etc. But when he with his parents, visits her to talk about marriage, she rejects him. Revealing the real reason behind her attachment to Ganesh, she tells him of her ill-fated love affair with army officer Subramani (Ajith). Eager to send him on his way, Nandini sends a letter in Ganesh's name to Ganesh's home, accepting the latest girl they picked for him and Ganesh returns home to find arrangements for his wedding in full swing. Coincidentally, the girl turns out to be someone (Suvalakshmi) he had dreamed of marrying during his pre-Nandini days.

Kutty (Vijay) wants to become a singer while working as a local cable provider run by Mani (Manivannan). His songs are appreciated by a college student Rukmani (Simran) and each time when she wishes to meet him, circumstances project him as a transitive element. He also becomes the cause for Rukmani losing her eyesight and repents for it. He starts to love her and he regularly writes to his mother about the development of love he has for Rukmani. When his mother dies (there is a beautiful emotional scene in toilet, which is a never-seen-before kind of thing), she offers her eyes to Rukmani. To meet the cost of the eye transplant, kutty offers his kidney to a Pune-based rich man. While returning home he inadvertently becomes an accomplice in creating explosives and he's arrested. Having regained her vision, Rukmani, who had studied for IAS, becomes a Collector and when Kutty tries to contact her, he is still the rowdy element in her mind. Finally the confusion is cleared after "Innisai Paadivarum" is played and they become lovers at the end as always.
