Prahalada (Tamil: பிரகலாதா) is a 1939 Tamil film directed by B. N. Rao. It deals with the story of Prahlada and his devotion to Lord Vishnu. The film was made 20 times in numerous languages, with the remakes generally being successful at the box office. The languages include Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali and Assamese. It is also the only story which has been made so many times, generally to box-office success. The film's story is based on the story of Narasimha and Prahlada. It features M. G. Ramachandran as Lord Indra This was the sixth film of Ramachandran who later became one of the popular actors of the Tamil film industry. The film also featured a sword fight sequence between M.G. Ramachandran and Santhanalakshmi.

Synopsis
The story is from a short episode in the Vishnu Purana, a holy text of Vaishnavites, that narrates the story of Prahlada, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu much against the wish of his father Hiranyakashipu, a demon. All of Hiranyakashipu's attempts to change his son's attitude are in vain. Finally, when he decides to kill his son, Lord Vishnu comes to the rescue of the son, in the form of Narasimha (a man-lion form), and kills the king.Acteurs

Sati, the daughter of Daksha, a descendant of Lord Brahma, marries Lord Shiva (V. A. Chellappa) against the wish of her father. Prince Udayasuriyan (M.G.R) wins all tough competition to marry Princess Kalamani (Anjali Devi). Durga (S. Varalaxmi) and Bhairavan (P.S. Veerappa) plot to ruin their lives. The young devadasi (Balasaraswathi of the ‘Malligai poomalai rojaa' fame) is forced by her family to yield to the lustful zamindar (Das) but she refuses for, she is devoted to Lord Shiva (MGR). She wishes to marry her lover (Mahalingam), but there are a lot of hurdles. The zamindar attempts to kidnap the woman to make her his mistress. But his attempts fail thanks to the intervention of Shiva and his consort Parvathi (Santhanalakshmi). Devadasi is tired of life, Answering her prayers, Shiva transforms her into a ‘Thumbhai' plant. Even today, its flowers are offered to Lord Shiva during worship in many places. Hence, the film also had the title Thumbhai Mahatmyam.

Vidhyadhari is the daughter of Vijayavarman, the king of Thejavathi. His minister wants the princess to marry his son but she refuses. Annoyed, the minister sets out to find another potential husband for Vidhyadhari. In the forest, the minister finds an illiterate cowman sitting in a tree and cutting into the branch on which he is sitting. The minister persuades the cowman to come to the palace and has Vidhyadhari marry him. When Vidhyadhari realises she has been cheated and is married to a farmhand, she prays to the goddess Kali for a remedy. Kali appears before her, names her husband "Kalidas" and endows him with phenomenal literary talents.
