The film was entered into the 8th Moscow International Film Festival in 1973. It was also selected as the Egyptian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 46th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.

La jeune Amna a quitté son village natal pour travailler avec sa mère en ville comme domestique. Elle est témoin de la mort de sa sœur, tuée par son oncle parce qu'elle aurait déshonoré sa famille. Amna n'accepte pas la décision de son oncle et, n'étant pas capable de l'affronter, elle s'enfuit et va chercher à se venger du jeune homme qui était en relation avec sa sœur et qu'elle considère comme étant la cause de ce malheur. Amna reproche au jeune ingénieur d'avoir abandonné sa sœur et de ne lui avoir apporté aucun soutien au moment où elle avait besoin d'aide. Prétendant être une femme de ménage, elle s'installe dans la maison du jeune homme et essaie de l'empoisonner sans succès. N'ayant pas réussi à passer à l'acte et ressentant l'amour du jeune homme pour elle, elle décide de quitter la maison au moment où son oncle découvre sa cachette. Quand le jeune prend conscience qu'Amna est en danger, il prend son arme pour la défendre.

Amal (Faten Hamama) is the wife of Ahmed (Ahmed Mazhar) who manages a textile factory. One day, she receives a threatening letter directed at Ahmed. The letter reveals that Ahmed committed a murder; he killed a teller to steal the factory's money. Dans le sud de l'Égypte, un riche propriétaire terrien (le Pacha) vit dans une immense demeure avec son neveu. Le fis de son contremaître, devenu agronome, travaille avec les paysans dont les terres voisinent celles du Pacha, à améliorer la qualité de leurs cannes à sucre. Le film commence avec l'annonce du succès obtenu par les paysans, dont la récolte obtient un meilleur classement que celle des terres du Pacha (avec l'avantage d'un meilleur prix de vente). Le Pacha, poussé par son neveu, lui fait ouvrir les vannes du barrage et inonde les terres des paysans, ruinant ainsi leur récolte. Le retour de la fille du Pacha (Faten Hamama), qui étudiait en Europe depuis 8 ans, ravive son idylle avec l'agronome (Omar Charif). La recherche du coupable, les traditions de vengeance, la lutte de classes et les manigances du neveu du Pacha, entraînent des drames dans cette communauté.

Faten Hamama plays Hoda, a poor woman who leaves an orphanage to live with three young men (Ahmed, Ali, and Ramzi) in a room on a building rooftop. The three of these men fall in love with her, but she prefers Ahmed, who is played by Omar Sharif, and the others accept that and stay loyal to their friendship. When, one day, Hoda gets sick, the three men urgently work hard to gather enough money to pay for her surgery. The film is not conclusive about what happens to Hoda, but she is supposed to live with her sickness for the rest of her life and can hardly work or get married. What the film shows is the love and fraternity that is created in her friends through her sickness.
