Amok is a 1944 Mexican romantic drama film directed by Antonio Momplet and starring María Félix and Julián Soler. The film is based on the novel Der Amoklaufer by author Stefan Zweig.

Synopsis

A doctor (Julián Soler) embezzles the proceeds of his Parisian clinic in order to better support the manipulative woman (María Félix) with whom he is having an affair. After losing all the money while gambling, he is forced to flee to an undeveloped region of India. There, he tries to mitigate the onslaught of a disease the natives term "Amok", while his past mistakes still plague him.

Doña Bárbara is a wealthy landowner hardened by an experience she had as a teenager in which she was gang raped by the same men who killed her first love. She has accumulated her vast lands and cattle herds by using men, as well as illegal means, such as bribery of local officials. One of the few remaining other landowners in the area is Santos Luzardo, who has returned from abroad to take control of his family's ranch. He suspects his ranch foreman, Don Balbino, had been working for Doña Bárbara in stealing his cattle. The other men do not believe Santos will be a match for Doña Bárbara, but he demonstrates his superior horsemanship, and it seems the balance of power in the region is going to tip.

Sous une dictature d'Amérique centrale, le gouverneur d'une île, où sont envoyés des prisonniers politiques et de droit commun, est assassiné en plein discours. Ramón Vázquez, son secrétaire, aux idées libertaires, le remplace temporairement. La dictature, qui souhaite punir le crime de façon exemplaire, envoie sur place une équipe spéciale dirigée par Alejandro Gual. Celui-ci avait jadis été un prétendant éconduit d'Inés Rojas, la femme du gouverneur, aujourd'hui devenue maîtresse de son secrétaire. Gual rédige un faux dossier pour impliquer Vázquez et forcer Inès à céder à ses avances. En contrant la manœuvre, ils vont s'impliquer plus encore dans le régime et les pratiques qu'ils prétendaient, en secret, réformer.

At the beginning of the film, there is a young man who decides to become a soldier to defend Mexico from an incoming invasion by the French army. After enlisting, he fell in love with a young lady, but it turns out that she is the niece of the French ambassador to Mexico. In one battle where the Mexican forces were near the brink of defeat, the soldier, Luis, decides to grab a trumpet and play the song "Mexicanos, al grito de guerra", the National Anthem of Mexico. Upon hearing the anthem played, the soldiers rally and overcome the French forces. However, Luis is shot and dies in the end at the same time his love escapes imprisonment.
