Baandhon is set mostly in Guwahati, before the climax it shifts to Mumbai. It tells the story of 73 years old couple – Dandeswar (Bishnu Kharghoria) and Hkawni (Bina Patangia), who live outskirts of Guwahati, grudgingly nudging each other for a divorce. They approach one of their ex-tenants, now a family friend, a successful local lawyer Jatin (Jatin Bora) to file the divorce petition. While Jatin is aware that this is just a passing phase and the couple will soon patch up. He advises the couple to live separately in the two different bedrooms of their bungalow. The couple had lost their only son and daughter-in-law in an accident some years ago and their grandson, Pona, is the only living kin. He is currently studying in IIT Bombay. However, things take an unprecedented turn when Pona disconnects a call from Dandeswar in the middle of a conversation. The subsequent tries to contact him fails. The story is set in 1962, the time of Sino-India war. It revolves around a widowed teacher named Ritu who is transferred to Koronga, a small Assamese village. The school here was destroyed by fire ten years earlier. Ritu takes on the challenge of rebuilding the school and starts campaigning among the villager. Ritu manages to build a school. It starts functioning under a large village-tree. Then comes a supposedly 'son of the soil' who, having lost his job there, wants to take over the school. Le docteur Rao (Girish Karnad), un vétérinaire, vient fonder une coopérative laitière dans un village où les producteurs de lait sont en majorité des dalits (intouchables). Il doit faire face à Mishraji (Amrish Puri), qui achète à bas prix le lait de tous les villageois, mais aussi au chef du village (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) qui souhaite utiliser la coopérative naissante pour renforcer son pouvoir. Rao s'aperçoit vite qu'il a besoin du soutien de la population dalit pour réussir son entreprise. Bindu (Smita Patil), une femme de caractère appartenant à cette communauté, sympathise avec lui et accepte d'y participer, entrainant avec elle les autres femmes. Mais Bhola, dont la forte personnalité fait le leader de la communauté, reste sur ses gardes. Sa méfiance s'aggrave lorsqu'il découvre qu'un des associés de Rao a une aventure avec une femme de sa caste. Lorsque Rao finit par convaincre Bhola, l'ensemble du village se rallie à sa cause et des élections sont organisées pour désigner le président de la coopérative. Le vainqueur est un dalit. Mais le chef du village n'accepte pas cette remise en cause de son pouvoir. Il trouve un allié en la personne de Mishraji dont l'entreprise est menacée par le développement de la coopérative. Mishraji parvient à convaincre Bindu, en grande difficulté financière, de prétendre que Rao l'a séduite. Rao et son équipe doivent quitter le village, mais la coopérative ne périclite pas pour autant : les producteurs de lait continuent son œuvre., 1h56

Kopil BoraThe story of Ajeyo takes place in a village of Assam in 1946, just some time before India’s independence and partition. Gojen Keot (Rupam Chetia), an honest yet short-tempered young man, lives alone with his grandmother. By doing some odd jobs here and there, he struggles to earn proper livelihood. He supports Gandhi and believes that once India becomes independent, social injustice will end. Though he dropped out of school, he tutors the no-caste Muslim girl Hasina (Jupitora Bhuyan). Once as a rookie participant in the freedom struggle he failed to deliver a note to a team of marching protesters against the British that caused the lives of two freedom fighters. He regularly battles ghosts of his past related to this incident.
