Chinnamul (alternate spelling Chhinnamul, The Uprooted) was a 1950 Bengali film directed by Nemai Ghosh. This was the first Indian film that dwelt with the partition of India. The story revolved around a group of farmers from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) who were forced to migrate to Calcutta because of the partition of Bengal in 1947. Russian film director Vsevolod Pudovkin came to Kolkata at that time, watched this film, and being inspired, he bought the print of this film to release in Russia. The film was shown in 188 theaters in Russia.

Synopsis

The film is based on a story of Swarnakamal Bhattacharya. Depicting the physical pain and crisis, the film is about the partition of Bengal and the flow of refugees from East Pakistan (present Bangladesh) into India. The story of the film begins in a village of East Bengal where people (Hindus and Muslims) leave peacefully. Govinda and Sumati are husband wife and they are about to have a child. But, the partition forces Hindu people to leave their ancestral village. So, they become refugee. They don't find any location or shelter in Calcutta and eke out their daily lives in temporary shelters in and around Sealdah railway station. Along with millions of refugees the family has to face untold misery in big city.

Habitant un camp de réfugiés au Bengale, Ishwar s'apprête à y fonder une école, mais rencontre un jour un ami d'université qui lui propose d'aller travailler dans une fonderie, le long de la rivière Subarnarekha. Il s'y rend avec sa petite sœur Shita et un orphelin de basse caste, Abhiram. Celui-ci est bientôt envoyé au collège, tandis que Shita demeure à la maison où elle étudie la musique. Des années plus tard, ses études terminées, Abhiram revient au foyer et prend conscience des sentiments amoureux qu'il nourrit à l'égard de Shita. Ceux-ci sont d'ailleurs réciproques. Soucieux pour son avenir, Ishwar veut envoyer Abhiram obtenir un diplôme d'ingénieur en Allemagne. Il ne peut épouser Shita, car il n'est pas de sa caste. Ishwar commence à faire rencontrer des personnalités de son rang à Shita, mais celle-ci s'enfuit le jour du mariage pour aller rejoindre Abhiram à Calcutta. Là, ils se marient et donnent naissance à un garçon, Binu. Plusieurs années plus tard, au cours d'un accident d'autocar dont il est le conducteur, Abhiram est lynché à mort. Désormais seule, Shita se prostitue pour survivre. Au village, Ishwar, seul lui aussi et en proie à une énorme culpabilité depuis l'échec de l'éducation des deux jeunes, traverse une période de désespoir. Un ami, Haraprasad, qu'il a connu dans le camp de réfugiés et qui lui aussi a tout perdu, l'emmène à Calcutta afin de l'égayer. Là, Ishwar, en état d'ivresse, égare ses lunettes et lorsqu'il pénètre dans un taudis, chez une prostituée, il ne reconnaît pas sa sœur Shita. Celle-ci, folle d'humiliation, se suicide. Ishwar, titubant, repart, le couteau ensanglanté à la main, s'accusant du crime. Après deux ans de combats juridiques, il est déclaré innocent et retourne dans son village avec son petit neveu Binu.

Calcutta. Neelkhanta, un écrivain réfugié du Bangladesh, ayant œuvré pour la réunification, sombre dans l'alcool. Sa femme et son fils l'abandonnent. Neelkhanta se décide pourtant à revoir sa femme dans le village où elle exerce le métier d'institutrice. La campagne est en proie à des heurts entre policiers et militants naxalites. Au cours d'un affrontement, Neelkhanta est malencontreusement abattu.

In this film Ghatak plays role of Nilkantha Bagchi, an alcoholic, disillusioned broken intellectual, in the character's own words "a humbug". His wife leaves him because of his insufferable alcoholism. After losing his wife and being forced from his home, he wanders through the countryside and meets unusual folks along the way. Nilkantha meets Bongobala, who was driven away from Bangladesh and does not have any shelter in Kolkata; he gives her shelter. He meets Jagannath Bhattacharjee, a village school teacher of Sanskrit. Jagannath's school was closed after political killings and he came to Kolkata in search of a job. Nilkantha meets Naxalites whom he describes as the "frame of Bengal", but misguided, successful and unsuccessful at the same time. The film, adventurous and revolutionary, is an exceptional mix of images that challenge the limits of narrative storytelling.
