Dushman is a 1939 Hindi social romantic drama film. It was directed by Nitin Bose for New Theatres Calcutta Production. The film starred K. L. Saigal, Leela Desai, Najmul Hassan, Prithviraj Kapoor, Nemo and Jagdish Sethi. The music was composed by Pankaj Mullick and the lyrics were written by Arzu Lucknavi. Nitin Bose besides directing also wrote the story and wielded the camera for the film. The dialogue writer was Sudarshan. The story subject about tuberculosis was suggested as a propaganda film by Viceroy Lord Linlithgow and his wife, who were then the Chairman and Patron of King George’s Tuberculosis Fund.

Ali's daughter, Meher (Uma Sashi), starts loving Mansoor but he rebuffs her as he is still in love with Husn Pari. On learning that Husn Pari is to be married off by her brother, Mansoor becomes enraged. There follows a fight where Mansoor is badly beaten and in which Husn Pari gets stabbed by the dagger meant to kill Mansoor.

At the annual college event the main singer goes missing. To help matters, Kusum Kumari (Kanan Devi) plays a record. The lyrics of the song are by a young poet (K. L. Saigal) living in a village. The Principal of the college, impressed by the poet’s work brings him to the city. The poet takes to training Kusum to sing for the next event and falls in love with her. One of the patrons (Nawab) is a wealthy businessman. He is enthralled by Kusum and after negotiations with her father, gets married to her in spite of the poet trying to intercede.

Chandidas (K. L. Saigal), a lover of truth and humanity is the disciple of Acharya (M. Ansari), a priest in the temple. Baiju (Pahari Sanyal), a washer-man lives with his wife and sister Rami (Uma Sashi) in the village where the Zamindar (landowner) Gopinath (Nawab) though outwardly religious and respecting the Brahmins is an evil man. Gopinath has a henchman Sarju (H. Siddiqui) who carries out his dirty work. Rami sweeps the compound of the temple where Chandidas sees her while he carries on his duties in the temple.
