Gaayathri is a Tamil film is directed by R.Pattabhiraman. It has Rajinikanth and Sridevi in the lead roles. Once again Rajini plays a cruel husband of Sridevi. Jaishankar plays a guest role in this movie. Singer Sujatha Mohan made her debut as a singer through this film at the age of 12. The movie was based on the story "Gayathri" written by Sujatha Rangarajan.

Synopsis

Rajinikanth is a rich man who lives with his sister (Rajasulochana) and a young house maid in Chennai. Her sister arranges a marriage for Rajinikanth with Sridevi, who lives in Trichy. Soon after they marry, Sridevi moves to Rajini's house and gets shocked to find the original face of Rajini and his sister(Rajasulochana). Rajini is a blue-film producer who records the bedroom scenes of him with his wife (Sridevi), without her knowledge and sells it in black market. Sridevi, initially believes Rajini a lot but later discovers that Rajini was already married to a woman who has become mad now. Jaishankar comes to know about this and tries to free Sridevi from the hands of Rajini. But, unfortunately Sridevi dies in the end without knowing the real face of Rajini.

Rajinikanth finds himself to be an orphan. He travels from his village to Madras. There he meets Janakaraj, who gives him a job. By some magical situation, Rajni discovers himself to be a son of a dead millionaire—through Visu. Visu is the guardian of Rajni's father's trust. If Rajni wants his inheritance, he has to follow certain rules. He can get an inheritance of ₹3000 crore if he can spend ₹30 crore in a month. The three conditions are: no contributions to charities, not to own any assets at the end of the month, and, above all, no one else must know. If Rajni fails to spend the money according to the rules, all the money will go to his father's trust which is managed by V.K.Ramasamy, "Nizhalgal" Ravi, Kitty and Raghuvaran. These four form a team of "villains". They want to spoil Rajni's efforts and get all the money for the trust and then to loot the money. Rambha is Visu's daughter and she is appointed as the accountant for Rajni for 30 days.

Sivaji is the loving elder step-brother of Rajinikanth and Vijaybabu. After his marriage, his wife (Vadivukkarasi) sends his brothers out when he goes to Chennai.
