Orphaned and poor Ajay (Govinda) meets with wealthy Aarti (Neelam), and both fall in love. Their hopes to marry are dashed to the ground, when Aarti's dad, Dhanraj (Prem Chopra), opposes Ajay and Aarti's marriage until he gets wealthy. Shekhar Gupta (Rishi Kapoor), a rich businessman, falls in love at first sight with Damini (Meenakshi Sheshadri). They get married and Damini moves into his palatial bungalow. One day, she witnesses Shekhar's younger brother, Rakesh, raping the maid-servant and rushes to tell Shekhar. Shekhar rushes over to prevent the sexual assault but is too late. The Gupta family conspire to cover up this shameful incident. But Damini decides to inform the police. The matter is taken up in court and Damini is asked to testify. Damini is portrayed as a mentally unstable person and confined in a mental institution for two weeks by a judicial order. Unable to bear the mental torture in the institution, she escapes and runs into a down-and-out alcoholic lawyer, Govind (Sunny Deol), who has the rape case re-opened. The maid-servant dies in hospital and the police write her death off as a suicide. But Govind is able to prove otherwise. It is up to Damini, Govind and Shekhar to provide justice to the victimised girl.

Sita Sinha (Sushma Seth) has brought up her son, Bihari and his friend, Amar as her own. The three are very close to each other. The film opens with widowed Laxmi (Jaya Prada), a loving and caring mother to Lalita (Neelam Kothari), a young college going devoted daughter. Ravi (Govinda) is a fellow collegian and a brilliant student. Gulshan Grover also is a student of same college. Vijay Choudhury(Shashi Kapoor) joins the college as English Professor. He shares good raport with the students. After a few misunderstanding Lalita and Ravi fall in love. In a college function Lalita sings the song "Patjhad Saawan Basant Bahaar" where she forgets the lyrics and the song is completed by Professor Vijay Choudhury. Upon asking how he knew the song he replies that this was a very famous song and his wife's favourite. Lalita tells him she learnt the song from her mother.
