Synopsis
Mary Carroll (Ginger Rogers) is a young woman from upstate who came to New York City to find a job and a career, but whose money has almost run out. She and Jack Bacon (Norman Foster) is an aspiring artist who lives in the same Greenwich Village building. Both are behind on their rent, and their landlord, Max Eckbaum (George Sidney), a good-natured soul who nevertheless has expenses to meet, comes up with a solution, to move Mary into Jack's loft, and have them share the apartment on a shift basis. They would never see each other or know who the other is, since Jack is out all night and sleeps during the day, and Mary is taking a job selling refrigerators by telephone, which keeps her out all day.Acteurs

Glory Eden is a radio star, the "Purity Girl" of the Ipsy-Wipsy Wash Cloth radio program, whose sponsor, Sam Ipswich, wants her public image to match her radio persona, and has her constantly chaperoned by the press agent, Speed Dennis. Glory's real personality is one of a party girl, who loves going to nightclubs, drinking, dancing and having a good time. During an interview with the columnist Elmerada de Leon, Glory hints that she might not re-sign with Ipsy-Wipsy. She says that she is tired of always being "the good girl", and needs to let down her hair for a while. Frightened of the prospect of losing their star attraction, and in order to placate her, Ipswich and Dennis hatch a publicity scheme to have her romanced by one of her many fans. They select a most unlikely subject, Jim Davey, who hails from the hills of Kentucky. However, when he arrives, the unlikely happens and Glory begins to fall in love with Jim, and when he proposes, she accepts.

When Stephen Dexter (Brian Aherne), boss of Dexter Cement, competes with the giants in his industry, they strike back by threatening to get an injunction against him the next day and tie up his business if he will not cooperate. The musical starts with the busybody postman who reads everybody's mail, Hector (Walter Brennan), delivering mail to the Dana household and particularly to Cora (Helen Broderick), the maid who he is in love with. Professor Oliver Dana (Robert Benchley) is the head of the household. The oldest sister is Sylvia (Anne Gwynne), an actress, and the youngest is Nancy (Ann Gillis), who is a bit of a flirt and has all the boys fighting over her. The middle sister Jane (Deanna Durbin), the "nice girl", makes her entry singing the song "Perhaps" to the rabbits she takes care of. Her father is trying to write a book about diet and is testing it on rabbits. Don Webb (Robert Stack) is her boyfriend, an avid car buff.

On joue la première de la comédie musicale On the Avenue, celle-ci dans un de ses sketchs se moque effrontément du train de vie exubérant de Mimi Caraway, de son père et son fiancé explorateur. Ces derniers non prévenus du contenu de la pièce y assistent et la quittent scandalisés. Mimi Caraway décide de se venger et rencontre Gary Blake l'acteur vedette de la pièce. Mais les deux jeunes gens tombent sous le charme l'un de l'autre. Après quoi Gary Blake promet d'édulcorer la pièce. La famille Caraway se rend donc au théâtre afin d'assister à la pièce révisée. Mais c'est à une version aggravée qu'ils assistent, en effet, Mona Merrick la vedette féminine de la pièce et ancienne petite amie de Gary Blake voit d'un mauvais œil ce début de liaison. La famille Caraway fait un scandale, et Mimi Caraway va jusqu'à acheter des comparses pour ridiculiser la pièce. Gary Blake est anéantie, mais quand Mona Merrick se rend compte qu'elle ne récupéra pas son ex petit ami et elle s'en va prévenir Mimi qu'elle est la seule responsable de la version aggravée de la pièce. Du coup Mimi annule son mariage avec l'explorateur et se retrouve dans un taxi avec Gary Blake afin d'aller se marier à la marie. À la fin tout le monde se réconcilie et la dernière scène nous montre Mona Merrick donner discrètement son numéro de téléphone au père de Mimi.
