Al Jolson plays Gus, a loyal stable boy and jockey to a rich family in the South that has been interested in horse racing and breeding horses for generations. (In a flashback we see Jolson's grandfather, who also worked for the same family back in 1870.) The young heir of the family, Jack, loses a lot of money by gambling and is blackmailed by the crooks he lost to for forging a check. They convince Jack to ask his mother to replace Gus with another jockey for the family's racehorse, "Big Boy", but she refuses. The crooks frame Gus and he is discharged for tampering with the horse. Gus is replaced by a jockey who has been bought off to lose on purpose. Gus find works as a waiter in a fancy restaurant. While working there he uncovers the details about the race throwing plot and he reveals this to Hughes and then, with his help, outsmarts the crooks just in time to then ride "Big Boy" to victory., 1h18

The film begins in Vienna in the year 1890 and we find that Walter Pidgeon, Alexander Gray and Bert Roach, who are three close friends, are going to join the Austrian army. Eventually, Pidgeon become a lieutenant and as a superior officer he is forced to distance himself from his two former friends. Gray and Pidgeon end up falling in love with a poor girl, played by Vivienne Segal, who is the daughter of a cobbler. Although Segal truly loves Gray, she chooses to marry Pidgeon because of his wealth and position, believing that money and the social mobility that goes with it will bring her happiness. Gray is heartbroken and travels to the United States with his friend Roach. Gray gets a job playing violin in an orchestra but struggles to support his wife and child. In the course of time, Segal travels to the United States and meets Gray and their love is rekindled. Gray learns of Segal's unhappy marriage and they plan to make a new life together. Segal, however, discovers that Gray is married and has a child. Feeling sorry for Gray's son, she sacrifices her happiness and returns to Pidgeon, her husband. The film now progresses forty years in time to the year 1930. Segal is now a grandmother and she is planning for her granddaughter, played by Alice Day, to marry a wealthy man since the family's fortunes are now on the wane. Day, however, falls in love with a composer, who happens to be the grandson of Gray. Segal immediately recalls her romance with Gray and of the mistake she once made. She consents to her granddaughters marriage and reminiscences about the man she really loves, who is now dead. One day after the wedding, while at the park, Segal sees Gray and her spirit walks off with him and leaves her body. The film ends as she is finally reunited with her long lost love., 1h30

Mobster Mama McGann is about to be caught red handed while robbing a bank, but she manages to escape with the help of the naive songwriter Bob Gunther, who is clueless about the robbery. Since Mama has already stolen Bob's wallet during their very brief encounter, she is struck by guilt and decides to return the wallet as thanks for his help. Her son, Sonny McGann, is ordered to return the wallet and hand over a small reward to Bob. Sonny is not what you would call a typical gangster, having far too much artistic blood flowing in his veins. Instead of dreaming of inheriting Mama's business, he yearns to become a poet. He decides to create a song to his childhood sweetheart Sadie, a woman he hasn't met for ages, and in need of a songwriter, he kidnaps Bob to help him out. When Bob has finished writing the tune to Sonny's lyrics, and the song is recorded, Sonny forces the local radio stations and music stores to play it, threatening them with his henchmen. Bob tries to get away from Sonny by speaking his language, and pretends to be lovesick. He names a singer, Magda Delys, as the subject of his strong emotions instead of his real girlfriend Linda Carroll. Sonny decides to help out by forcing Magda to marry Bob, and arranges for a ceremony to take place. Before the wedding, Bob is kidnapped again, this time by Sonny's rival Big Foot Louie. Sonny tries to rescue Bob on his own, but when he gets to Louie's, Bob is already writing a love song for the gangster. Sonny and Louie start discussing a truce, and a possible musical business venture together, while Bob is forced by Sonny's goons to marry Magda. When Sonny comes back and interrupts the "ceremony" he finds that Magda in fact is his old school sweetheart Sadie. A double wedding is arranged, where Sonny marries Sadie, and Bob marries Linda.
