Il s'agit de l'adaptation de l'autobiographie de Quentin Crisp, rendu célèbre grâce à ce téléfilm diffusé sur ITV. « L'Homme que je suis a vite été considéré comme un document inestimable de la visibilité gay dans l'Angleterre du XX siècle ». Ce film « est une célébration de la sexualité homo qui a encouragé beaucoup d'homosexuels à sortir du placard dans les années 1970 ».
Synopsis
Homosexuel efféminé dans la société britannique intolérante des années 1930, Quentin Crisp décide de laisser libre cours à sa personnalité flamboyante. Ses tenues et son maquillage, ainsi que son humour, amènent les gens à le remarquer et l'accepter.Acteurs

At age 73, writer and melancholy master of the bon mot, Quentin Crisp (1908–1999), became an Englishman in New York. John Foster's camera follows Crisp about the streets of Manhattan, where Crisp seems very much at home, wearing eye shadow, appearing on a makeshift stage, making and repeating wry observations, talking to John Hurt (who played Crisp in the autobiographical TV movie, "The Naked Civil Servant"), and dining with friends. Others who know Crisp comment on him, on his life as an openly gay man with an effeminate manner, and on his place in the history of gays' social struggle. The portrait that emerges is one of wit and of suffering.

Un jeune infiltré, Peter (Christien Anholt), est envoyé par des parlementaires pour recueillir des preuves en vue d'une poursuite contre les clubs fétichistes opérant en Grande-Bretagne. Ex employé de la société Holy Hardware (devise : Log On To The Lord !), Peter est plongé dans le choc du glamour sexuel de ces grands clubs et fêtes fétiches. Le député Harding (Tom Bell), se réjouit des preuves incriminantes que son protégé ne tarde pas à rassembler contre les clubs, mais Peter s'entiche de Tanya Cheex (Guinevere Turner), déesse du sexe fétichiste. Il veut qu'elle se calme, qu'elle devienne normale et qu'elle évite d'aller en prison. Elle veut le pervertir. Il s'ensuit un dilemme moral pour Peter, qui doit décider s'il doit témoigner contre la femme qui l'attire et le repousse à la fois. Il veut désespérément avoir une relation conventionnelle avec elle... Elle l'aime et est heureuse de jouer à plein de jeux, mais ne lui permettra jamais d'avoir des relations sexuelles avec elle.

Comme dans le roman, le personnage central, Orlando (Tilda Swinton) ne vieillit pas - ou à peine - à partir de la fin de l'adolescence dans l'Angleterre élisabéthaine jusqu'à la fin du XX siècle. Au cours de ces trois cents ans, Orlando, personnage androgyne par excellence, change de sexe (d'un homme il devient une femme alors qu'il est en poste diplomatique pour l'Angleterre en Orient) et connaît l'amour sous plusieurs formes : jeune homme du XVII siècle, il tombe amoureux de Sasha (Charlotte Valandrey), la fille de l'ambassadeur russe, qui l'abandonne ; au XVIII siècle, l'archiduc Harry (John Wood) le poursuit de ses assiduités alors qu’Orlando, devenu femme, se voit déchue de ses droits de propriété ; au XIX siècle, Orlando, désormais femme, s'éprend de Shelmerdine, voyageur d'origine américaine (Billy Zane). Virginia Woolf faisait s'interrompre le roman en 1928 (année de la fin de la rédaction de celui-ci), Sally Potter choisit la même perspective en prolongeant l'histoire d’Orlando jusqu'à l'époque de réalisation du film. L'intrigue du film est accompagnée des commentaires d'une voix off (Sally Potter) et ponctuée d'apartés de la comédienne principale face à la caméra qui viennent conforter le ton humoristique d'ensemble.

Set in 1957, Great Moments in Aviation follows Gabriel Angel (Rakie Ayola), a young Caribbean woman from Grenada who embarks on a cruise to England with the intention of becoming an aviator. Upon boarding the ship, Gabriel finds herself assigned shared sleeping quarters with fellow passenger Duncan Stewart (Jonathan Pryce). The rest of the ship's passengers, including missionaries Angela Bead (Vanessa Redgrave) and Gwendolyne Quim (Dorothy Tutin) assume the two are married, and when Professor Rex Goodyear (John Hurt) appears to recognise Duncan as his old acquaintance Alasdair Birch, Duncan fosters the assumption to maintain his cover. It transpires that Duncan is a forger, who many years ago stole a Titian painting from Goodyear and had an affair with his wife. Goodyear believes that his painting is on board the ship, and leads Gabriel to believe that Duncan was responsible for his wife's death. She is furious with Duncan for lying to her, but the two go on to reconcile and later make love. Their romance is complicated by the fact Gabriel professes to have a husband waiting for her in England. She explains that he has been there for two years working, and she is joining him so that she can fulfil her lifelong dream of becoming a pilot — inspired by her grandfather Thomas (Oliver Samuels) who flew off into a storm and never came home. They begin a relationship nonetheless, supported by Angela and Gwendolyne, who also come to realise that they have feelings for one another. They each confess to having secretly been in love with the other for years, and become lovers, vowing to live together in their retirement. It comes to light that the death of Goodyear's wife was an accident, caused as he and Duncan fought over her. Duncan returns his painting, and goes on to burn all his forged documents and papers in front of Gabriel. She confesses that her marriage to Michael is over, and she and Duncan resolve to begin a life together. The film ends with Gabriel's grandmother Vesuvia (Carmen Munroe) reading her family a letter from England, informing them that Gabriel and Duncan are happy together, and are expecting a child. As the family express their delight, Gabriel flies overhead, having finally attained her pilot licence and become an aviator.
