On joue la première de la comédie musicale On the Avenue, celle-ci dans un de ses sketchs se moque effrontément du train de vie exubérant de Mimi Caraway, de son père et son fiancé explorateur. Ces derniers non prévenus du contenu de la pièce y assistent et la quittent scandalisés. Mimi Caraway décide de se venger et rencontre Gary Blake l'acteur vedette de la pièce. Mais les deux jeunes gens tombent sous le charme l'un de l'autre. Après quoi Gary Blake promet d'édulcorer la pièce. La famille Caraway se rend donc au théâtre afin d'assister à la pièce révisée. Mais c'est à une version aggravée qu'ils assistent, en effet, Mona Merrick la vedette féminine de la pièce et ancienne petite amie de Gary Blake voit d'un mauvais œil ce début de liaison. La famille Caraway fait un scandale, et Mimi Caraway va jusqu'à acheter des comparses pour ridiculiser la pièce. Gary Blake est anéantie, mais quand Mona Merrick se rend compte qu'elle ne récupéra pas son ex petit ami et elle s'en va prévenir Mimi qu'elle est la seule responsable de la version aggravée de la pièce. Du coup Mimi annule son mariage avec l'explorateur et se retrouve dans un taxi avec Gary Blake afin d'aller se marier à la marie. À la fin tout le monde se réconcilie et la dernière scène nous montre Mona Merrick donner discrètement son numéro de téléphone au père de Mimi., 1h8

Marylin Miller plays the part of an American circus performer, doing her act in a British circus, who is engaged to a man she does not love. A former boyfriend, played by Lawrence Gray, stops by to see her before taking boat back to the United States. Miller realizing that she loves Gray, decides to run away. She embarks on the same boat that Lawrence takes. Her father, who realizes what his daughter has done, reaches the boat just as it is about to leave and manages to board it. While on board, Gray becomes engaged to be married to a wealthy socialite (Barbara Bedford). Miller learns that she will not be allowed to disembark in the United States without a passport. In order to land, Miller marries an American friend, intending to divorce him as soon as she is safely inside the United States. After arrive in the states, Miller tells Gray about her love for him. Bedford overhears them and tells Gray that she will announce their engagement at a party that very night. Tommy Tanner (Wheeler) and Egbert G. Higginbotham (Woolsey) are two vaudevillians who were kicked out of the last town they performed in. After fleeing to the town of Lockville, the duo befriend elderly widow Mother Talley (Lucy Beaumont). Mother is upset because she is unable to get customers into her drug store. In addition, Mother owes a payment on a bank note to Harry Watters (Jason Robards). Tommy and Egbert decide to turn Mother's drugstore into a money-making venture, even producing their own afternoon radio program right in the store. Harry, who wants to buy the store as part of a bootlegging operation, attempts to sell the duo an alcohol-laced drink, referring to it as "lemon-syrup". The "syrup" gains praise from everybody in town, until the police show up to close down the operation. Tommy and Egbert are suspicious of Harry, and it's up to them to find Harry, clear their name, and save Mother's store.
