Lonely Wives is a 1931 American comedy film directed by Russell Mack and produced by E.B. Derr for Pathé Exchange, and was distributed by RKO Pictures after the merger of the two studios; it starred Edward Everett Horton, Esther Ralston, Laura La Plante, and Patsy Ruth Miller. The screenplay was written by Walter DeLeon, based upon a successful German Vaudeville act entitled Tanzanwaltz, penned by Pordes Milo, Walter Schütt, and Dr. Eric Urban. The German production had been translated for the American stage by DeLeon and Mark Swan and, under the same title as the film.

Synopsis

Richard "Dickie" Smith (Edward Everett Horton), is a seemingly respectable defense attorney by day, who turns into a philandering Don Juan when the clock strikes 8 o’clock. His wife, Madeline (Esther Ralston), has been away for several months, and is not expected back anytime soon. However, Madeline's mother, Mrs. Mantel (Maude Eburne) is staying with the Smiths, in an effort to curtail the possibility of any straying by Richard. Unbeknownst to her, he has made plans to go out on the town that night with his new, sultry secretary Kitty Minter (Patsy Ruth Miller), and his new sexy client, Diane O'Dare (Laura La Plante), who, a lonely wife herself, wishes to divorce her husband for neglect.

Not long after the death of his first wife, Walter Fairchild becomes engaged to Florence Wendell. Florence ignores the warnings of Gilbert Gaylord, who is also interested in marrying her, that she doesn't know what she is getting herself into; that no woman will ever be able to fill the void in Fairchild's life left by the death of his wife. After they are married, Fairchild and Florence have some contention as she buys into the warnings given her by Gaylord. To appease her, they move out of the house he shared with his first wife, and allows her to furnish the new home. Sensing that he and his new wife need some time alone together to start their new lives, he sends his seven-year-old son, Walter Jr., to a boarding school in Switzerland. After Florence becomes pregnant, Fairchild is notified that is son is very ill, and will most likely not recover. Despite Florence's pleas for him not to leave her, he travels to his son's side. As he leaves, Florence tells him not to return.

Brooks (William Norton Bailey), a publisher and his publicist (Lee Moran) decide to boost the sales of a wartime book of flying experiences. They credit the book to popular author Robert Street (Edward Everett Horton), who is completely ignorant about aviation. Robert gets into all sorts of trouble in attempting to carry on the ruse, saving his friend's business but also attracting the attention of aviation-mad Grace Douglas (Patsy Ruth Miller). At first, he is able to carry out simple publicity events, but when he accidentally starts up an aircraft, his incredible aerobatics end with a landing in a haystack. When a race is staged between him and French ace Major Jules Gaillard (Armand Kaliz), it ends with Robert confessing he is no pilot, but still winning Grace's heart.

Une jeune femme (Marlene Dietrich) arrive à Paris incognito et se rend chez une amie avec laquelle elle entretient un passé obscur, la grande-duchesse Anna (Laura Hope Crews) qui entretient un salon de rendez-vous. Elle y rencontre un Américain, rentré des Indes, Tony Halton (Melvyn Douglas), qui la prenant pour la grande-duchesse l'invite à dîner à 20h45. Tony tombe vite amoureux de la jeune inconnue qu'il surnomme Ange (Angel en anglais) et ils passent une soirée très romantique, symbolisée par le thème musical qu'improvise un violoniste. Mais à la fin de la soirée, Ange s'enfuit en lui faisant promettre de l'oublier et de ne jamais chercher qui elle est. Ange est en réalité l'épouse du diplomate Frederick Barker qui est souvent à l'étranger, plus particulièrement à la Société des Nations, et la laisse seule la plupart du temps. Tous deux connaissant une union tranquille, si tranquille qu'ils ne parviennent à se disputer. Peu de temps après son retour de Genève, il revoit un ami rencontré pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, qui s'avère être Tony Halton. Frederick l'invite à déjeuner ce qui permet à Tony de retrouver Ange. Celle-ci tente de lui faire croire qu'elle ne l'a jamais rencontré mais, évidemment, il ne la croit pas. À la suite de quelques disputes entre Sir Frederick et son épouse, Ange part à Paris avec l'intention d'y retrouver Tony. Frederick est maintenant presque certain que son épouse l'a trompé et qu'elle est la jeune femme qu'Anthony cherche partout. Les trois personnages se retrouvent chez la grande duchesse où Frederick laisse à sa femme le choix suivant : ou elle épouse Tony ou elle part avec lui à Vienne, dans l'hôtel de leur voyage de noces. Ange choisit finalement son mari et tous deux partent pour Vienne.

Wealthy French playboy Toto Duryea (Frank Fay) is irresistible to women, but is in love with none of them.
