Navarathri ("Nine Nights") is a 1964 Tamil Drama film by A. P. Nagarajan. The film is well known for starring Sivaji Ganesan in nine distinct roles: the basic emotions - wonder, fear, compassion, anger, peace, love, courage, repulsion and happiness. It was Sivaji's 100th film he acted. Navarathri traces Nalina's (Savitri) experience of these nine emotions on nine consecutive nights. The record of playing most number of roles in one Tamil film was long held by Sivaji Ganesan until 2008 when it was broken by Kamal Haasan in Dasavathaaram (2008). In 1966, the film was remade in Telugu with the same title and in Hindi as Naya Din Nai Raat (1974)with Sanjeev Kumar.
Synopsis
The film opens with the narrator explaining that there are nine types of human behaviors (Navarasam) such as Wonder (அற்புதம்), Fear (பயம்), Compassion (கருணை), Anger (கோபம்), Equanimity (சாந்தம்), Disgust (அருவருப்பு), Elegance (சிங்காரம்), Bravery (வீரம்) and Bliss (ஆனந்தம்) and that Sivaji Ganesan's nine roles represents one character per role.Acteurs

Mookkaiyan (Sivaji Ganesan) belongs to a well-to-do family and lives in the village Sozhavandan. He is held in high esteem by the villagers for his prowess. One day, his uncle Chockalingam (V. K. Ramaswamy), his wife Bama (Sukumari) and their foreign-educated daughter Kalpana (Jayalalithaa) come to Sozhavandan to participate in the Mariamman festival. Kalpana is fascinated by Mookaiyan's prowess; her mother disapproves of Kalpana's emotional reaction while her father is happy. Bama settles a young man of Madurai to marry Kalpana. Moved by the pleas of Chockalingam, Mookaiyan goes to the bridegroom's house and brings back Kalpana, saying that he has the right by birth to marry her.

"Sikkal" Shanmugasundaram (Sundaram) (Sivaji Ganesan) is a devoted Nadaswaram player, but is short-tempered and sensitive. He meets Mohanambal (Mohana) (Padmini), a Bharatnatyam dancer, and they fall in love with each other. Sundaram's ego prevents him from developing his relationship with Mohanambal, who asks him to play a Thillana on his Nadaswaram while she dances. Mohanambal's mother Vadivambal (C. K. Saraswathi), an influential and mercenary woman, wants her daughter to marry a wealthy man so that she can settle down in life properly. Blinded by love, she disobeys her mother, creating a rift between them. Unaware of her feelings, Sundaram decides to leave the country along with Karuppayi (Manorama), a folk dancer whom he considers to be his sister. Mohana calls him a coward and challenges him to stay, which he readily accepts. In a temple, Sundaram plays the Thillana and Mohana dances. Sundaram, impressed with Mohana's performance, crowns her the title "Thillana Mohanambal". Suddenly Nagalingam (E. R. Sahadevan), a landlord who wanted to marry Mohana, turns up to stab Sundaram with a poisoned knife out of jealousy. He came to the temple to kill Mohana.

Vijay (Rajinikanth) is a professional photographer who falls in love with a rich girl,Priya(Sridevi). They marry against her parents' wishes. The film is about an old man Sivaji (Sivaji Ganesan) who can know the character and the future of a person by just looking in eyes. Giri (Harish Kumar) is a rich student who spends lot of money for his friends. He falls in love with Sivaji's daughter Aruna but Aruna rejects him and humiliates him. Giri decides to not give up. Later, Aruna and her friend Rajeswari (Sasikala) go to a picnic with their classmates. Giri's friend Aandavar (K. S. Raghuram) doesn't want to see Giri and Aruna together, for fear that Giri won't anymore spend money for self-interest. Later, Giri and Aandavar plan to humiliated Aruna. Aruna is blamed to be a nymphomaniac, to prove the contrary the innocent girl commits suicide. The hatred intensifies between Giri and Rajeswari. In the meantime, Rajeswari's brother-in-law Dinesh (Rajasekhar) burns Rajeswari's sister and wants to marry Rajeswari. Finally, Sivaji and Giri come to her rescue.

Lord Shiva gives a sacred fruit, brought by the sage Narada, to his elder son Vinayaka as a prize for outsmarting his younger brother Muruga in a competition to win it. Angered by his father's decision, Muruga, dressed as a hermit, goes to Palani, despite Avvaiyar's attempts to convince him to return to Mount Kailash. His mother, goddess Parvati, arrives there and narrates the stories of four of Shiva's divine games to calm Muruga.

Uma asks him to climb up a peak so that she will consider him as a suitor. Sundar suffers from Acrophobia and almost falls while climbing, at which point Uma accepts his love.
