Chittor V. Nagaiah (born Vuppaladadiyam Nagayya) was a multilingual Indian film actor, thespian, composer, director, producer, writer and playback singer from Andhra Pradesh, India. Indian film journalist and the editor of Film India, Baburao Patel, described Nagiah as The Paul Muni of India. In his honor, the Mahati Chittor Nagaiah Kalakshetram of arts was established in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. He was the lead protagonist in the most expensive 1940 Telugu production, Viswa Mohini touted to be the first film on the Indian motion picture world.

Nagaiah is starred in about 200 Telugu films, and 160 films in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. Widely recognized as one of the finest Indian method actors, his acting quality, was usually playing intense characters, often immersing himself in study of the real character's traits and mannerisms. He was the first south Indian film star to be honoured with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1965.

Sivaji Ganesan earns a living driving a truck. He is a rash driver and more than usually also driving while drunk. One night he stops at a prostitute's, spends the night with her, and gets up late the next morning. He rushes out and drives at breakneck speed in thick fog to make up for lost time while again drinking. He inevitably ends up running over and killing a farmer. But despite the opportunity to hit and run, he decides to stay and face the consequences. He is arrested by the police, charged, and brought before the courts.

The story is about an Indian family of Ramaiah (Jaggaiah) and closely resembles Hindu epic Ramayanam. Ramaiah and Gopi (Shobhan Babu) are brothers. Janaki (Jamuna) is wife of Ramaiah and looks after the home very well. Chitti (Roja Ramani) is their dearly loved sister. They married her into a wealthy family of Kantham (Suryakantham) giving big dowry lending money from Rayudu (Prabhakar Reddy). This leads them to many problems including differences between the family members. Finally their son in law (Chandramohan) and sister helps them solving the problem. The entire family is reunited and live happily.
