Navaratri (Telugu: నవరాత్రి) is a 1966 Telugu Drama film directed by Tatineni Rama Rao and starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Savitri. It is produced by Anumolu Venkata Subba Rao of Prasad Art Pictures. It is a remake of a 1964 Tamil film with the same title, starring Sivaji Ganesan and Savitri. The story is written by A. P. Nagarajan for both films.In the song Addala Meda Undi, actress J. Jayalalithaa, Kanchana, Jamuna Ramanarao and Girija make a guest appearance as patients admitted in mental hospital.

Lead Actor (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) got high critical acclaim for his portrayal of Nine Characters. This film is regarded to be having some of the finest ever performances by Nageswara Rao.

The plot of the movie is totally based on what happens during Navaratri (Nava means Nine and Ratri means Night).

Synopsis

The film opens with the narrator explaining that there are nine types of human behaviors (Navarasam) such as Wonder, Fear, Compassion, Anger, Equanimity, Disgust, Elegance, Bravery and Bliss and that Nageswara Rao's nine roles represents one character per role.

Venkataramaiah (Gummadi) respectable person in the society, who runs a timber business. He has a happy joint family with his wife Padmavathi (Jayanthi) and 3 sons & 2 daughters. Anand (Nandamuri Balakrishna) the younger son of Venkataramaiah is a very happy-go-lucky boy. He does not take up any responsibility neither does he earn anything. But he simply wastes his father's money. Accidentally he meets Kavita (Vijayashanti) who works as a dance teacher in a school. They both are very opposite to each other. They always fight with each other. But on a certain occasion Anand falls in love with Kavita but she thinks that he is just trying to fool her. Sivaram (Satyanarayana) opponent businessman to Venkataramaiah, who once worked as a worker under Venkataramaiah, always had quarrels with Venkataramaiah and Anand. After sometime Kavitha understands Anand's love, but his family members did not agree for their marriage, so Anand leaves the house and marries Kavitha. Meanwhile Sivaram throws Venkataramaiah into heavy debts, so entire property comes to the occasion. Remaining children leaves Venkataramaiah alone which leads to his heart attack and his wife's death. Finally, Anand comes to their rescue and who he keeps up his parents prestige and honor, forms the rest of the story.

Madhu also called Chinnababu (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) a zamindar's son is very gullible who every one laughs at. One day he meets a girl Vasanthi (Jamuna) who stays in a portion of his house. Vasanthi becomes very friendly with Madhu and behaves very close to him as she sees Madhu just as a brother and nothing else where as in Madhu mistakens Vasanthi's friendly nature to love. One day Madhu has to leave to Chennai for higher studies. He writes letters but he never get any reply from Vasanthi to any of his letters. When he comes back he finds out Vasanthi and her family left the city without telling anybody. Madhu finds a letter from which he realizes that Vasanthi only saw him as a brother. He gets very depressed and falls sick. Seetha (Savitri), Ramakrishnaiah (Gummadi)'s daughter takes care of Madhu by taking care of his health and giving him company. The whole story is how he recovers from the depression he faces because of Vasanthi.

Ranga (Akkineni) is son of Teacher (Raavi Kondala Rao). His friend is Vasu (Jaggaiah). Buchabbai is proprietor of Buchabbai Estates. Buchabbai has a son Raju (Chalam) and two daughters (Kanchana and Rajasree). Vasu and Elder daughter are in love each other. Ranga works in the office of Buchabbai. Ranga hits the car driven by the daughters of Buchabbai. They influence their father to remove Ranga from the service. He protests peacefully in front of their house with friends. Venkat Ramaiah (SV Rangarao) and Kanaka Durga (Suryakantham) adopted Suguna (Savithri). When they have their own child Varalakshmi, Kanaka Durga's affection towards Suguna diminishes. Vengalappa (Relangi) adopts suguna. She becomes a doctor and loves Chandram (ANR). Chandram develops Tuberculosis and forces Suguna to marry doctor Raghunath (Jaggayya). Dr. Raghunath expires in an accident. Chandram is cured of TB and returns. Suguna decides to dedicate her life to social work. She convinces Chandram to marry Varalakshmi. Kanaka Durga creates problems in the relations. Suguna corrects them.
