Synopsis
Kamatchi is a South Indian village girl who is about to get married. Her marriage is stopped due to dowry problem and hence her aunt marries off her son Selvaraj to Kamatchi. On the nuptial night Kamatchi suddenly screams when her husband approached her and blabbers in some unknown language which Selvaraj cannot understand. Selvaraj looks at the mirror by chance and shocks on seeing a reflection of a strange woman in the place of his wife and rushes to bring the village excorcist. The excorcist confirms that Kamatchi is possessed by a spirit and attempts to drive it. But the spirit introduces itself as a girl named Marian Ma from Singapore and tells him that Selvaraj's father who is working in Singapore is in terrible danger and Selvaraj must go to Singapore to save him. Selvaraj reminds of a letter written by his father stating that he is in danger. Selvaraj decides to leave Singapore along with his wife and the exorcist. Marian Ma tells that she will possess his wife during night time and leave her during dawn. Selvaraj ensures that Kamatchi does not know about her condition.Acteurs

Kalimuthu (Ramarajan) is the lead singer of a group performing Villu Paatu. The village head (Shanmugasundaram) decides to reconstruct the tumbledown village temple and gives Kalimuthu responsibility for funding money. Finally, the music director Ilaiyaraaja helps them financially. Then, Kalimuthu approaches a reputed sculptor (M. N. Nambiar) from another village. The sculptor and his daughter Abhirami (Rani) come to their village. Later, Kalimuthu and Abhirami fall in love with each other. Abhirami's father wants to marry Abhirami to his nephew Rajasekharan (Chandrasekhar) while the village head's son Chelladurai (Vikas Rishi), a womanizer, has an eye for Abhirami. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) plays the role of a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by his village people. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. So Vallavaraayan convinces the priest at the temple to mix a poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result she becomes incapable of conceiving. But surprisingly, Vaitheeswari soon becomes pregnant-though she has pretended with the help of the mid-wife (S. N. Lakshmi), to do so to uphold her husband's honor. She takes poison and kills herself unable to bear the grief of being incapable of giving her husband a child and on her deathbed makes Vaanavarayan swear to take Ponni (Aishwariya) as his wife. Vaanavarayan however refuses until Ponni agrees to marry Sembattai (Thalapathi Dinesh)- Vallavarayan's hechman-who abandons her to Vallavarayan's vice. Infuriated Vaanavarayam attacks Vallavarayam and spares his life after giving him a sermon on how to win the heart of people.

Mammootty is a sincere district collector. A female leader of a major political party is kidnapped by a terrorist Veeraiyan(Nassar) and he promises to return her back if his injured brother Arasappan (Napoleon) is treated well and brought back safely. The government agrees to this condition and asks Mammootty to look after Arasappan. At first;Arasappan hates Mammootty and his family as Mammootty works for the government against whom his brother's group is rebelling. But;the kindness shown by Mammootty's wife and mother change his attitude. Just when he was about to turn over a new leaf; a bad thing occurs. The police team;without taking the necessary orders from Mammootty go to the forest and attack Veeraiyan's gathering. This angers Arasappan;but he was restrained by Mammootty. Now;the police accuse Mammootty of having links with the terrorists as Arasappan ran away from his house and Mammootty condemned the police action. Hence;they arrest Mammootty's wife and mother. (Mammootty ran away to find Arasappan) Hearing this sad news; Arasappan himself surrenders to the police as he did not want them to suffer for him. But the police do not spare him despite his surrender.
