Kalimuthu (Ramarajan) is the lead singer of a group performing Villu Paatu. The village head (Shanmugasundaram) decides to reconstruct the tumbledown village temple and gives Kalimuthu responsibility for funding money. Finally, the music director Ilaiyaraaja helps them financially. Then, Kalimuthu approaches a reputed sculptor (M. N. Nambiar) from another village. The sculptor and his daughter Abhirami (Rani) come to their village. Later, Kalimuthu and Abhirami fall in love with each other. Abhirami's father wants to marry Abhirami to his nephew Rajasekharan (Chandrasekhar) while the village head's son Chelladurai (Vikas Rishi), a womanizer, has an eye for Abhirami. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Kamatchi is a South Indian village girl who is about to get married. Her marriage is stopped due to dowry problem and hence her aunt marries off her son Selvaraj to Kamatchi. On the nuptial night Kamatchi suddenly screams when her husband approached her and blabbers in some unknown language which Selvaraj cannot understand. Selvaraj looks at the mirror by chance and shocks on seeing a reflection of a strange woman in the place of his wife and rushes to bring the village excorcist. The excorcist confirms that Kamatchi is possessed by a spirit and attempts to drive it. But the spirit introduces itself as a girl named Marian Ma from Singapore and tells him that Selvaraj's father who is working in Singapore is in terrible danger and Selvaraj must go to Singapore to save him. Selvaraj reminds of a letter written by his father stating that he is in danger. Selvaraj decides to leave Singapore along with his wife and the exorcist. Marian Ma tells that she will possess his wife during night time and leave her during dawn. Selvaraj ensures that Kamatchi does not know about her condition.

Angamma then tries to split Muniyandi and Pandiamma. What transpires next forms the rest of the story.
