Payithiyakaran (Tamil: பைத்தியக்காரன்) is a 1947 Tamil film produced by and starring N. S. Krishnan. It was based on the play of the same name staged by Krishnan's drama troupe. It was the first film for Krishnan after his acquittal in the Lakshmikanthan murder case. M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) played a supporting role in the film.

Synopsis
Paithiyakaran was based on V. Shantaram's Duniya Na Mane, which in turn was based on the Marathi novel, Na Patnari Goshta by written by Narayan Hari Apte. It was a socially themed movie which advocated for widow remarriage and against older men marrying women much younger than them.Acteurs

Prince Udayasuriyan (M.G.R) wins all tough competition to marry Princess Kalamani (Anjali Devi). Durga (S. Varalaxmi) and Bhairavan (P.S. Veerappa) plot to ruin their lives. Durga plans to take the queen place in order to live with Udayasuriyan while Bhairavan abduct Kalamani from the palace. The young devadasi (Balasaraswathi of the ‘Malligai poomalai rojaa' fame) is forced by her family to yield to the lustful zamindar (Das) but she refuses for, she is devoted to Lord Shiva (MGR). She wishes to marry her lover (Mahalingam), but there are a lot of hurdles. The zamindar attempts to kidnap the woman to make her his mistress. But his attempts fail thanks to the intervention of Shiva and his consort Parvathi (Santhanalakshmi). Devadasi is tired of life, Answering her prayers, Shiva transforms her into a ‘Thumbhai' plant. Even today, its flowers are offered to Lord Shiva during worship in many places. Hence, the film also had the title Thumbhai Mahatmyam.

The film is based on an age-old Buddhist folktale connected with Mauryan Emperor Ashoka's son Kunal. The Mauryan prince Kunal was courted by Ashoka's younger queen Tishyarakshita and when he rejected her advances, was falsely accused by the queen of trying to seduce her and was thrown into prison and blinded. The story, however, comes to a happy end with his eyesight being restored by Lord Buddha and the king acquits of all the charges.

Rathnakumar the chief protagonist, even in poverty he woos and wins the hand of Bhanumati. A skeleton at the bidding of the hero, hurls a giant rock on the ground, and diamonds, rubies and emeralds pop out. Getting into evil company, he gets addicted to vices that make him ill-treat his wife and then desert her without any qualms. He proceeds to fall for a beautiful princess and impresses her under false pretences. He gets his comeuppance towards the end, his dubious past revealed and is imprisoned. Thereupon his conscience awakes, he is filled with remorse at the thought of his patient wife.

The story is from a short episode in the Vishnu Purana, a holy text of Vaishnavites, that narrates the story of Prahlada, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu much against the wish of his father Hiranyakashipu, a demon. All of Hiranyakashipu's attempts to change his son's attitude are in vain. Finally, when he decides to kill his son, Lord Vishnu comes to the rescue of the son, in the form of Narasimha (a man-lion form), and kills the king.

Sati, the daughter of Daksha, a descendant of Lord Brahma, marries Lord Shiva (V. A. Chellappa) against the wish of her father. This annoys the king (Daksha) and he performs a yagna (to insult Shiva), where he invites all gods except his son-in-law (Lord Shiva). Sati attends this sacrifice against the wishes of Shiva and is insulted by her father. Unable to bear this, Sati kills herself by burning in the fire.
