Synopsis
The phrase "shubho mahurat" is associated with the beginning of shooting for a feature film. The first day of shooting is usually marked by a grand reception, followed by a token shooting or vice versa. This Miss Marple-esque film begins with this event. An NRI producer, Padmini Chowdhury (Sharmila Tagore), has come to India to invest in a film. Her second husband Sambit Roy (Sumanta Mukherjee), an out-of-work director, is assigned the job of direction.Acteurs

Calcutta, 1902. Le vice-roi britannique déclenche des vagues de protestations en annonçant la partition du Bengale. Rajlakshmi (Lily Chakravarty) est la mère d'une famille bourgeoise bengalie. Un jour, elle montre à son fils, Mahendra (Prasenjit Chatterjee), étudiant en médecine et son ami d'enfance Behari (Tota Roy Chowdhury), la photo de Binodini (Aishwarya Rai), une jeune femme cultivée et éduquée qu'elle connaît depuis l'enfance, pour un éventuel mariage. Les deux hommes refusent. Mahendra se marie avec Ashalata (Raima Sen), que Behari convoitait également, tandis que Binodini se retrouve veuve seulement un an après son mariage. Mahendra, très épris, passe le plus clair de son temps enfermé avec sa femme et commence à délaisser ses études, ce que sa mère voit évidemment d'un mauvais œil. Elle n'apprécie pas vraiment l'épouse de son fils et lui reproche de l'avoir rendu docile et paresseux, allant jusqu'à l'insulter de sorcière.

Au Bengale au XIXe siècle. Bhubaneshwar Chaudhary est un zamindar (propriétaire terrien) riche et autoritaire. Désireux d'occuper la première place, tant aux yeux de ses voisins que du colon britannique, il veut faire réaliser une sculpture de la déesse Durga ayant les traits de la reine Victoria. Sarojini (Aparna Sen) is a well-known danseuse, whose immense dedication to her art permeates every aspect of her life. While honor and acclaim make way into her professional life she is less successful on the domestic front. Her growing popularity leads to her husband Manish's (Boddhiswatta Majumdar) gradual resentment towards her and ultimately a rift between the couple. The film is a quiet drama about a lonely, sad, unfortunate middle-aged woman. Banalata (Kiron Kher) has lived a solitary existence since her husband-to-be died the night before their wedding from a snake bite. Never having quite gotten over the tragedy, she rarely ventures out and is clearly very lonely. This changes when she agrees to allow a film production unit to shoot in a wing in her sprawling estate. Suddenly her house is filled with movie stars and glamorous people, including the beautiful actress Sudeshna (Rupa Ganguly) and charming director Deepankar (Chiranjeet Chakraborty). Though she knows that not only is Deepankar married but that his former lover Sudeshna still holds a torch for him, the lonely widow finds herself drawn to the director. He is exactly the sort of worldly character whom she has always longed to meet. The rakish man flirts back and even persuades Banalata to appear in a bit part in the movie. Yet once the film crew decamps, things at the estate return to the same grinding tedium as before, though the woman feels her isolation all the more acutely. The letters that Banalata writes to Deepankar go unanswered, and her bit part in the movie ends up on the cutting-room floor.
